1983-2011 Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Bangalore: A dangerous ritual was conducted in Bagalkot in Karnataka where scores of babies were tossed by a temple priest from atop a chariot and caught by the waiting crowds. The ritual is held by people below at the annual festival of a temple in Bagalkot. After the ceremonies are over inside the temple, the priest takes out a 'shobha yatra' in the village. The act takes place once the yatra has gone around the village. Parents willingly hand their children to the priest and beg him to toss their child first. The priest tosses them below while they are caught by their parents using blankets and sheets. urbestfriend Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 seen that before.they all should be hanged I also think it is barbaric but ask those parents who toss their children, they don't think it is anything barbaric but they are doing it for the well being of their children, considering this ritual has been going on for hundreds of years. Different societies, different view points, doesn't make sense to punish them, rather education is the key.

Different societies, different view points, doesn't make sense to punish them, rather education is the key. just bcoz they r thier parents doesnt mean they can do anything. n I dont buy the education thing.u dont need to be educated to know it can be fatal.the parents r partners in crime too.just that they can take plea of being misguided also these things happen in cities n its wrong to assume all of them r uneducated

My point is we're judging them based on our set of moralities and asking for punishment , but they feel the ritual has been there for ages and no crime in doing this act! Its the responsibility of society to bring awareness through education so that they change their world view which is same as me and you!

Nowhere in the Hindu (or other religions in India) scripture would you find a recommendation for this kind of an act. It's just a plain stupid regional tradition and nothing more than that. Law (and moral) does not permit parents to endanger the lives of their children in anyway. The government needs to step and shut such customs up. But it wont happen, because that is how democracy operates - governments do not tell people not to do what is popular.

No one is denying it is a dangerous act, and I feel bad about the very act but I don't start asking for punishment as I wouldn't want to judge them from my own set of moralities. Sometime back I'd seen a documentary about some African tribes who do body piercing on children and that was very scary. Even in our own culture ear piercing of small kids was very common which might seem inhuman to us now. Hand feeding of kids might look inhuman to people of Norway.
ganeshran Posted April 5, 2012 Posted April 5, 2012 ^ hmm you make some valid points. Circumcision is one such act which is cruel to young children yet widely practiced in few cultures. Though regardless of the underlying reasons, its inhuman to subject a child to pain just to satisfy some obscure religious custom from which the kid cant even opt out of.
