Crookbond Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Oh yea, Ganguly scored heavily too - totally forgot about it So, which means that apart from a series which Ganguly was - which was in doubt of being match fixed - Ganguly's home ODI record is very poor. How can such a captain be a clear winner for the best captain I have no idea!
PaceAttack Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 What does challenged mean? How many test series did we win in their own backyard. Yes' date=' we were competitive and ofc given our recent drubbing it looks even better, but it is not like we went to countries and smashed the cr@p out of teams and won series after series or several WCs under Ganguly.[/quote'] Ganguly was captain for only one time in the WC and he took us to the final. Don't forget srinath retired before the WC and Sourav met him personally and asked him to play the 2003 WC. No captain would have done that. As for as the foreign tours were concerned, Sourav was the first Captain who wanted to win overseas. This is what our beloved captain Dhoni said when asked about poor performances overseas: when you go out to different places. ItÃÔ (going abroad) just to improve your cricket because 80 percent of the matches you play in India. All these away series are there to improve you as a cricketer. What is important is to be yourself and slightly tune your batting if needed to the conditions, just like Formula One cars do depending on the conditions, he explained Not thinking too critically about the batting is very important, noted Dhoni, who ended his poor run with two brisk fifties in the third Test. źou want to enjoy the game without thinking too much about technique and aspects like how you need to change your game when you go out to different places. Trichromatic Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 This is why I believe Dada was the only captain who took it serious to win outside India. Still we won only one series under Ganguly and two under Dravid.
PaceAttack Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Still we won only one series under Ganguly and two under Dravid. Yes, If you call the 1-0 win in England was great achievement by Dravid, I got nothing to say to u really. Giving fake reasons like 'My bowlers were tired, My fielders were tired" in the final test match and satisfying with 1-0 win. Really, A gutless win which sums up Dravid's captaincy. He was no way close to what Dada achieved including taking India to the finals in the 2003 world cup.

He was only following Dada of SCG 2004 :winky:
Number Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Stats don't show the true picture. He was one captain who was regularly seen in the stands of domestic games where you don't even find selectors even now. A post from U_G. You can never underestimate what Ganguly did. Dhoni has done a great job and taken India to a different level, but Ganguly was the one who fought against the system which allowed people like Dhoni to make a mark. Before Ganguly took over regional and quota selections were rampant. Ganguly was the captain who fought for players he believed in (Yuvi, Sehwag, Bhajji, Kaif, Zaheer etc.) when they weren't even from his region! He not only backed them to the hilt but fought for them against the selectors. Case in point backing Yuvi even though selectors wanted to drop him in mid 2000s or backing Harbhajan all the way when he was kicked out of the National cricket academy. Without Ganguly Bhajji's career would have been probably gotten over and we wouldn't have seen Sehwag as an opener or even Yuvi come to the party in the shorter formats of the game. The other aspect is the steel & resolve he instilled in Team India. Wins are not a result of talent alone but a function of self belief and attitude as well along with talent. The reason India under-performed in 90s was because of absence of the first two. Back in 90s I actually saw Srinath hit Ponting with a bouncer and then apologize to him! That was not all - Ponting then gave a nice long sounding off to Srinath telling him to go mind his own business and I still vividly remember Srinath walking back head down back to the bowling mark! I was so pissed off at Srinath at the moment, and still haven't forgotten him for that incident, that if I had been a selector I would never have selected him for India ever. When you represent India fans expect you to fight all the way. At least Ganguly gave us that bit. His team may have lost but never due to a lack of fight and you wouldn't see an opponent mouthing off at an Indian player and getting away with it. Can you imagine any Indian bowler, or batsman for that matter, now who will take that sort of abuse lying down? The credit for that change goes to Ganguly. It is very easy to forget the past when times are good but one needs to give credit to the people who made the present what it is now.
PaceAttack Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 He was only following Dada of SCG 2004 :winky: Yes, He was scared of losing, but never gave fake and gutless reasons like " My bowlers were tired, My fielders were tired etc". Zak denied dravid's claim and said that he was ready to bowl and he wasn't tired at all...:haha:
PaceAttack Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 OR Ganguly at Nagpur 2004! :D Everyone knws what happened at Nagpur 2004.

He was one captain who was regularly seen in the stands of domestic games where you don't even find selectors even now. A post from U_G. I absolutely agree with U_G. It's a balanced opinion and he gives credit where due unlike the fanatics. Also, ask U_G about Ganguly the player now and also his frailties and he will paint you a pretty similar picture as is painted here.

He also made them cure in super quick time & for this I shall :hatsoff:
Stuge Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 wassup with this ?Are we comparing Gangu with Dhoni in terms of record outside India ? Dhoni's love for Trundlers is endless .hence India's future is just going in the sliding direction.

Crookbond Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 U r saying as if u were the physio of Indian team.:hatsoff: And you're talking if you were the manager of the Indian Team.
Number Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Ganguly rated mainly because of Emotions... Captaincy is overrated a smany suggest...No one considers Ricky ponting has good captain but same people rates Steve waugh highly even though 2 lead similer kind of teams may be Dhoni has to swing his shirt or pant to consider greatest Indian captain ever :WTF: Currently he'll do a good job if he can draw or produce a fighting loss in a match away from home.

Gutless rather. :hysterical:
Crookbond Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 You mean in the IPL ? Yes + his kaptaani post 2004 - abysmal.
PaceAttack Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 And you're talking if you were the manager of the Indian Team. I did not claim Ganguly was faking injuries. U did.:cantstop:
