Needforspeed Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 http://www.espncricinfo.com/indian-premier-league-2012/content/current/story/565659.html Morkel, who has shared the new ball with Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav this season, said India's fast bowlers have the potential to be lethal, if they are guided properly. "In India, they play non-stop cricket, and these guys bowl a great amount. To play and bowl fast consistently, you need to have a window of two months where these bowlers are told, they are not going to bowl at all and only do strengthening and gym work. "I can't see why India can't produce or compete with the best fast bowlers. They have Umesh, Varun, (Parvinder) Awana is bowling real quick and you have (Ashok) Dinda. It's a question of managing these guys. That's how we have gone about in South Africa, whatever cricket I play, I don't remember missing a Test match for South Africa." So true..but our administrators dont seem to understand the concept of taking a break to hone one's skills and fitness levels. If only BCCI could put a structure in place to guide the fast bowlers.
IKnowU Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 you need to have a window of two months where these bowlers are told, they are not going to bowl at all and only do strengthening and gym work. We can only dream
JourneyMan Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Best thing would be for all four of them to go play county, and then do some physical training after the season. We need to prepare them for test matches. ODI's should be mainly treated as experimental training grounds.
saket123 Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Fast Bowlers can really shine (more often than not) on clayey pitches. BCCI does not like Clayey pitches.. neither do our batsmen. Our "fast" bowlers do not have enough understanding of developing strategies and techniques of fast bowling because for most of the lives they are bowling on flat tracks. Someone as experienced as Zaheer, who has bowled quite a few times on bouncy tracks has had the opportunity to work on bowling techniques much better than his other Indian counterparts.. Indian cricket's main focus is batting batting and thirdly.. batting. That is what our audience wants.. to see swashbuckling batting performance.. that is what our team members want.. and that is what the vast majority of young cricketers aspiring to be part of the national team also want. We are batting focused.. which is why throughout the History of Indian cricket.. we've not had a single Wasim Akram or Waqar Younus or McGrath. Being a successful fast bowlers requires tremendous amount of fitness training and consistent dedication to keeping up that regiment. It requires consistent access to bouncy tracks that aid bowlers who can hone their skills and technique. You can be pot bellied like Sehwag and still be an awesome batsman.. but stuff like that won't work with fast bowling. First for our youth that is too much effort for our pot-bellied=happily married+access to rich food culture. Secondly, BCCI is honestly not the smartest management/planning management out there. We will continue to churn out top class batsmen who will perform incredibly well on flat tracks and will fail pretty much half the time overseas. We just need accept it for what it is.
jj_28 Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Until the BCCI smartens up and realizes the needs of our bowlers, we will always have a problem with fast bowling
vamos_rafa Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 The problem is that inspite of the voices raised by the likes of Kapil Dev or Srinath to develop fast pitches, noone seems to be paying any heed to it. I like the kind of role Zaheer has been playing with the team where in he mentors every fast bowler, but that really needs to be stretched as well so that each fast bowler is properly mentored.
Needforspeed Posted May 22, 2012 Author Posted May 22, 2012 BCCI needs to appoint a fast bowling coach for players who are yet to play for India. Shortlist about 20 of them with the most potential and put them permanently under this coach and his team. The brief to the coach should be to strengthen their skills as well as fitness. At present most of the Ranji team coaches end up spoiling whatever little potential the bowlers have, because traditionally Indian coaches (with a few exceptions) have been former batsmen who have more faith in bits and pieces trundlers.

rkt.india Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 Fast bowling coach traveling with Indian team is of little use because he is rarely going to get much time working on them. It is better to have him in camps where he can work with youngsters coming up, identified talents, and India prospects.
Cricket Tragic Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 yeah but just which coach is going to develop them? rkt
