They should have raised it gradually as the price per barrel was increasing & the rupee weakening over time. This election based decision making speaks a lot about the commitment to their job.

There is complete policy paralysis in the government with idiotic allies like Mamata and a populist section of Congress ready to block any economic reforms. Pranab needs to put his foot down and start showing any concrete action to arrest this decline of the rupee and increase investor confidence.

They should just remove the tax and make the prices unregulated.
If they reduce tax, how will the government make money and fund social welfare schemes :questionmark:

If they reduce tax' date=' how will the government make money and fund social welfare schemes :questionmark:[/quote'] If they keep on increasing price like this then in another 5-10 years there will be hardly any petrol cars left.Only 2 wheelers will run on petrol and with their consumption Govt will not receive much revenue

It's long time coming. Subsidized petrol is just waste of money. I never understood why government should give a break to people who can afford personal vehicles.
:giggle: :giggle: .. hope you know that petrol is overpriced in India to run the massively wasteful govt schemes ...

Instead of govt controlling the prices, it should be decided as per market rate. As for the tax, well all countries make money this way but I guess it's better to have a cap say like rs 10 per liter rather than %

True, although govt will probably lose the majority.
won't help much in controlling the fall of the rupee.
Will help manage the internal deficit though.

Nothing will happen because any such measure will mean giving a dose of bitter medicine and Kangress cannot afford that with Lok Sabha 2014 approaching fast.

that can anyways be manged with the huge bonanza in the form of the upcoming Spectrum Auction.
One time thing, no ? Probably good to cut some of the deficit for that year. This oil pricing policy needs to be set for the long term.

since when has this Govt cared for the long term? They will have their Spectrum Bonanza which will reduce the deficit in the short term and that will be enough to give them some advantage over the opposition with a few months left for elections.
