"Who will lead the party after elections is not important for us at this stage. Now our priority should be to ensure return of BJP to power," party's election campaign committee chairman Modi told a selected gathering of Odisha unit leaders at a hotel here. "Please work hard to defeat the Congress and do not indulge in such things (projecting the PM candidate)," Modi said responding to a proposal by Odisha party leaders that he be the party's prime ministerial candidate. The BJP strongman suggested that the state leadership prepare chargesheets against the Congress and the ruling BJD in Odisha. "Ensure that the charges against rival parties reach the people living in villages," he said. He said at least 10,000 mobile phones of each assembly segments should be regularly fed with BJP's ideologies and "inefficiencies' of the Congress. Modi asked the partymen to develop public relations with people living in villages and use social media like Facebook and Twitter. "We are passing through the age of technology. People in villages also now use mobiles and other means of communications," he said. Asking the state leadership to identify leaders from different castes and give them positions in the party, Modi said, "Caste leaders hold votes which are required for any party for elections. If necessary, give up your positions to accommodate caste leaders." Stating that Congress was gradually being disliked by people across the country for its "failure" to control situations like price rise, Modi said people in villages needed to be sensitised about the "misdeeds" of the UPA government. He asked partymen to hold street corner meetings and rallies to highlight the misrule of the Congress. Though Modi asked party leaders to prepare a chargesheet against the Naveen Patnaik led BJD in the state, his target was obviously the Congress. "The next elections will be fought between the BJP-led NDA and Congress-led UPA," he said. Describing his Gujarat experience, Modi asked the Odisha leadership not to lose confidence and work to install a BJP government in the state. "BJP had only 16 MLAs in the Gujarat assembly in 1990 and no one in panchayat or urban local bodies. See the difference today. BJP has been ruling the state and will continue to do so in future," Modi said. On Odisha, he said, "People here hate the Congress and therefore a non-Congress government has been ruling the state. The BJP should take advantage of the situation and emerge as the peoples' party." These 2 factors (i.e. Ram mandir issue and Modi) combined will be more than enough to result in Polarization of Muslim votes and I don't see BJP being in a position to get enough votes from its own core supporters to fight that kind of polarization.

Going by his recent statements I think he is that dumb. The Ram mandir issue will most certainly be raised soon. He can at least try not to antagonize them further but remarks about puppies/secularism ka burqa etc are making the BJP's task of coming back to power much harder.

That is why Narendra Modi should be extremely careful with the numbers he dishes out for public consumption. He, after all, has a strong fan base among the urban, educated electorate which is quite capable of making sense of numbers and deciding whether they are just smoke and mirrors. The Congress, pathetic and directionless otherwise, seems to be completely focused in its homework against Modi. A day after he launched a broadside against the government for many of its failures, it came out with enough unflattering numbers to blunt his charges. Worse, it raised direct questions on Modi’s track record of governance in Gujarat – which, with due apology to his diehard supporters, has glaring loopholes – and that of the NDA government’s too. It appears the arrival of Modi on centre stage has given the Congress a sense of purpose. Meanwhile, the rest of the BJP, barring the spokespersons, has receded into the background. Perhaps Modi is the lifeline the Congress was so desperately looking for. With its miserable track record in the government what with allegations of big ticket corruption, policy paralysis and governance deficit, the party hardly deserves a third term. In fact, till now a renewed mandate for the UPA looked impossible. But Modi’s presence has changed that equation. It smells a chance now. That explains the amount of energy it devotes to demolishing the Modi phenomenon, at least in the media. The BJP for its part, should be worried that the party’s focus has shifted from corruption and misgovernance, which should have been the party’s strongest talking point in the run up to the polls, and veered into avoidable controversial subjects such as secularism where it stands on shaky ground. This apprehension was expressed by senior party leader Yashwant Sinha on Monday when he cautioned Modi against making controversial statements. “…The more he speaks. The more controversy he will create. The attention will shift from misgovernance and corruption to what happened more than 11 years ago in Gujarat. It will be a grave mistake to allow Congress to change the agenda and force debate on its own terms,†Sinha wrote in a newspaper article. While he clarified this later, saying that the Congress’ attack on Modi would only make him more popular, the fact is the agenda certainly has changed to the Congress’ liking and it has not helped that Modi has been making indiscreet remarks, which is rare by his standards. The BJP’s campaign committee chief has already provided a direction to the poll campaign and might find it difficult to reverse the situation. Worse, the electoral campaign, from the BJP’s point of view, is getting too personalised. Modi has been hogging all the attention and there appears little space for other seniors in the party. It does not help that he refuses to stop tom-toming about his ‘achievements’ in Gujarat at all fora. It won’t be a surprise if the 2014 elections end up becoming Modi vs the rest rather than the BJP vs Congress. He is no more the party’s election panel chief, he is its supreme leader. In Gujarat, the case was similar. The party should be worried. Coming back to statistics and numbers, all of Modi’s claims are disputable. Numbers, as we mentioned earlier, will go to bed with any argument. But ultimately, they tell the truth. There’s no denying that other states have performed better than Gujarat. Many have comparable, if not better, models of economic development too. He has only played the publicity game better. The more his numbers are contested, the more his halo as the growth messiah will recede. Can he manage to swing the public opinion on the strength of the fiction of numbers alone? It’s doubtful. Coming from a brilliant strategist like Modi, the approach is confounding. He is known to be a strong organisation man, efficient at building the cadres into a fighting unit. He should be getting more involved in grassroots politics. Or is this a strategy in itself where he wants to monopolise the whole right wing space by making himself the centre of attention?
