Why would a southie be insulted by being called a southie? If someone called me a madrasi, now that would p!ss me off. More at their ignorance than anything else.
True. Once I was in Bhopal, one Nothie lady asked me where I am from. Since I knew she wouldn't understand if I told her I was from Kerala, I told her I was from South India. She looked at me and said "Acha to aap Maharashtra se hain" :hysterical: The southern most point for her was Maharashtra. The rest didnt exist...and she was a middle class lady.

Well I know this maharashtrian guy, who was almost p!ssed off that I do not know tamil. I told him I only know telugu and have no clue about tamil. He said "but you are a southie you should be knowing tamil and what is telugu?" Seriously, WTF? How can people be so ignorant. Especially I did not expect this from a maharashtrian. AP is their friggin neighbouring state for heavens sake. :cantstop:

^ And there are a lot of other people who are called "Chinkis" than just folks from Nagaland and Mizoram. #TrueStory
Except Assamese and to an extent legal and illegal Bengalis (in areas near West Bengal and Bangladesh etc.), most others in North-East are called Chinkis in mainstream India due to their looks. The pure Assamese (not including tribals etc. of Assam as they do not speak or fall under Assamese ethnicity) are of Indo-Aryan ethnic descent and so, looks are somewhat similar to most North Indians. On the other hand, most of the tribals of Assam as well as people of the other states are mainly from the Tibeto-Burman family and some are from Austro-Asiatic descent. Not only in Northeast but these ethnic origins are also present outside NE such as Sikkim and Ladakh etc. And Tibeto-Burman is the same ethnic group where all Tibetans fall and look quite similar to East Asian countries such as China, Japan, Korea, Myanmar etc. looks unlike the Aryan and Dravidian looks which are there in other parts of India. So, Chinki is actually a negative and racial slur to denote their resemblance to the Chinese and hence, degrading. Discrimination are often the root cause of many problems and revolts. The hundreds of terrorist groups and insurgents took birth and got support in the past in the NE in the past due to discrimination from the rest of India. Similarly, South India had not accepted the Indian constitution initially as it was more pro-Hindi and discriminated South Indian languages. It was only after the official language was broadened from only Hindi to multiple languages and especially English that a lot of issues got solved. So, discrimination always gives rise to problems. Hope that all such discrimination ends especially with North Eastern parts being some of the most volatile parts of India even today. However, things have improved a lot in the last decade or two IMO though still nowhere near mainstream India. Here is a map of the Sino-Tibetan language family (marked in red). Most people from the language family also have Tibeto/East Asian looks and are called "Chinkis" in many parts of India. The grey parts (including Japan) also contain Indochinese language family but they are outside India and hence, irrelevant. The light green parts are the Indo-European languages which are mainly Indo-Aryan ethic group in India. And the blue parts are Dravidian parts with both language family and ethnic group being Dravidian. Sino-Tibetan_languages.png
