The Dark Horse Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 He may not be classical/orthodox as Warne but Murali has got the results to prove that he's better-and more than that carried his team on his shoulders along with vaas from minnows to world beaters. On the other hand Warne always had support from McGrath n co.

Crookbond Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 Relevant article http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/466589.html Most relevant text. Most of the numbers above suggest there's little to choose between the two bowlers, which is exactly as it should be when comparing two legends of the game.
thongale Posted July 16, 2012 Posted July 16, 2012 the Batting avg that I'am talking about is not exactly the Arithmatic mean that you are referring to because of the not-out problem ... so whether the data is normally distributed or not is irrelevant. PS: Don't forget to respond on the openers thread. this post await your response : http://indiancricketfans.com/showpost.php?p=2034487&postcount=321Agree with the first part that batting average is not strictly a mean. But it's the mean of runs per dismissal I am afraid. Second part, yes I, will.
thongale Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 it isn't the "mean" of anything. Not atleast from a statistical pov. So now pls tell us why the cricket community should not rely on the Batting Avg to quantify batting and instead use something else . awesome :two_thumbs_up:Of course it's the "mean" of runs per dismissal. And guess what, unless you are one of those old grumpy poms who don't understand stats, all others find average very useful in judging players.:--D

So, the runs scored on the pitches were averaged out and averages of each decades were compared to show that pitches in era X were easier to score than in era Y. I find several issues in that which I;ve already mentioned in other posts. Also, be ready on the other post because now according to the Ravi Shastri of ICF you "won't hold a straight face if this were real life". :giggle:
Crookbond Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 Teacher also taught a new thing today - Batting average was called batting average because it was used for batting not to rate pitches. So, now next the RAvi Shastri will include this aces [1] Arthur Mold [2] Ernie Toshack Oh wait ... he's already done that! :hysterical:

I was just taking the piss off poms and convicts who do not believe in stats or science.
carnish Posted July 17, 2012 Posted July 17, 2012 You are a dead man .... not only did you mek the big kahuna as a friggin drinks man but you left out Hero Hawaldar and to add insult to injury you picked Imran instead. You are sooo friggin dead :hysterical: Great team BTW :hatsoff: No idea who Hero Hawaldar is?? And seriously I dont participate in the SRT-Don discussions as I usually dont have much time to devote to such long discussions but I think even though Don was immensely talented, he was quite lucky to play in an era when cricket was not so competitive .. it was more like Golf today.. amateurish .. comparing him with any players of this era is not possible .. but professionally speaking I would rate most of todays era players higher than anyone say before 60s ..
carnish Posted July 18, 2012 Posted July 18, 2012 :two_thumbs_up: Hero Hawaldar = Kapil :giggle: Ailla Big Kapil fan .. But unfortunately couldnot pick him in the team. Imran was too good to ignore
