The Outsider Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 The final round of the ICF all time XI - the runner up in this poll will be the designated 12th man to play in place of one of the fast bowlers on a turning track. For me, the choice is straightforward - Warne. But beyond Warne there have been a lot of great spinners in the past. I am making this poll multiple choice to allow for two choices if you want since the second player would be the first reserve on a turning wicket.
gaurav92 Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Where is Bhajji with 400+ Test Wickets in his cabinet :hitler:
gaurav92 Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I'd love to have both Murali an Warne, but if I were to pick one, it would be Warne :icflove:
Lurker Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Ideally I wouldnt mind going with two spinners - an offie and a leggie. Ideal attack would perhaps be two fast bowlers - Marshall and Barnes, or Marshall and Lillee/Hadlee, followed by spin attack of Warne and Saqlain, or Gupte and Saqlain with Miller/Kapil/Imran as 5th option. Saqlain, to me, does not get enough credit because he ran out of steam and didnt pick 400+ and beyond as Warne, Murali and Kumble did. But when he was at top of his game doubt any spinner was better than him...even though Warne, Murali, Kumble were all playing alongside him. Not sure if that would make my team a selection of XI players or XIII :--D
Ultimate_Game Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Warne for me. My team after this final selection... Hobbs Gavaskar Bradman Tendulkar Richards Sobers Gilchrist (wk) Warne © Marshall Ambrose McGrath And in my squad of 16 I would also have the following... Wasim Akram Kallis Hammond Sehwag (for matches in sub-continent) Murali (again for matches in SC where 2 spinners may need to be played)
Clarke Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Warne any day. Both he & Murali don't have a brilliant record in India but if Warnie wasn't an Australian in the same era, i'd bet he would have troubled the Aussies more than Murali did. I'd love to have both Murali an Warne' date=' but if I were to pick one, it would be Warne :icflove:[/quote'] He's still not sure whether he's made it large (big) and needs to ask, that too with some Soda/Daaru sponsorship.
Sidhoni Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 So my final team - Hobbs Gavaskar Bradman Tendulkar Richards Kallis Dhoni(wk) Imran© Marshall McGrath Warne 12th man-Murali
The Outsider Posted July 4, 2012 Author Posted July 4, 2012 So who will you drop betwen Marshall and Waz on a spinning pitch ? Wouldn't drop anyone. Even on a turning wicket - not a pitch like Bangalore '87 or Bombay '04 - I would play either Hadlee, Marshall, Akram, Warne or McGrath, Marshall, Akram, Warne because all the pace bowlers can bowl well enough on flat pitches and Sobers is there to fill the role of a second spinner in the second innings on a turning wicket.
India-KXIP fan Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Is this real life? How exactly is the drugee better than Murali? Lesser Wickets, much lesser average. Failed against Indian batsmen (real test for spinners). Warne avg 47 against India, Murali 32. No way he is better than Murali. You just don't compare someone with an average of 22 to 26, Warne has also played 12 more matches for 90 less wickets. Simply no comparision.

In case you didn't watch them bowl over the years, did you even look at the numbers themselves ? Warne plays 3 tests against Bang/Zim for 17 wickets while Murali plays a whopping 25 games for 176 of the pies. Without all the minnow bashing, he manages 624 wickets from 108 games @ 24.87, hardly anything to seperate the two there. One can consider Murali way ahead of Warnie if the goal is proven minnow bashing. Everywhere else, its a proper contest. Besides, Warnie as an electric character on the field and a worthwhile tailender is much more complete, although his bowling wins enough laurels to ensure his ATG XI position. BTW, your rounding system is well, biased. 25.41 ~ 26 & 22.72 ~ 22 :haha: Not that it matters here.

Clarke Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Kumble > Warne! Please! You guys :headshake: Actually i looked up some numbers since Murali is considered equal/greater than Warne by many. Since Warne couldn't bowl at the greatest side of his time (and an ATG side) i checked on Murali's performance vs Australia with Kumble as a yardstick. When it comes to overall numbers vs Australia, Kumble managed 111 wickets from 20 tests @ 30.32 while Murali has 59 wickets from 13 tests @ 36.06 . Both have a brilliant overall record @ home, especially Murali with avg of 19.6 vs Kumble's 24.9 . When it comes to touring Australia, they are poles apart. Kumble has 49 wickets from 10 tests at 37.73 while Murali could only gather 12 wickets from 5 games @ 75.4 . I wonder how much the no ball saga affected him but his numbers are way below what one would expect from a world champion spinner when competing against a world champion team on their turf. I can only conclude given Warne's extremely balanced home/away overall record that he would have better numbers than any other spinner while bowling to the likes of Langer, Hayden, Martyn, Ponting, Waugh & Gilly on their turf.

Who's better now? Umad brah? Yeah Umad. 34 tests is almost 1/3 of his career (excluding minnows), I wonder how many hundred more he would have finished ahead of Warne. Please go. He was only good in conditions he was used to against inept batsmen (against spin). Murali bad away from home but out of the 2 Murali is better.
India-KXIP fan Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 but murali was a chucker. Atleast he didn't take drugs. Strong example setting for kids who looked up to the phaggot. Only thing that matters is Murali was cleared by the ICC. Murali>Warne /thread
