CG Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 steyn anyday, we can have batsmen having better than sachin or even strike rate in india, but steyn is a fast bowler who i would like to see in india bcoz of the deficiency in quality of fast bowlers here...a bowler like steyn can win u matches single handedly... but the question also depends on which pasrt of world u are in, for example a paki or an australian right now would anyday want sachin ahead of steyn,bcoz of deficiency in batting department Sachin any day.we would have made steyn gun an rusty gun by making him bowl on flatbeds.

The question or debate shouldn't change too much even if you replace Steyn by other fast bowlers - Akram, McGrath, Ambrose etc.
Number Posted July 23, 2012 Posted July 23, 2012 A hall of famer wkt taker backed up by Srinath, Prasad and Kumble would have been awesome for us. I still remember so many matches where Srinath & Prasad took wkts with the new ball for us to release the pressure with the 3rd seamer. The drop-off from our top 2 and the rest was so steep that other teams knew all they had to do was to play out the first hour and then make hay the rest of the Test. And secondly I am assuming that a genuine fast bowling wkt taker would have allowed us to blow away the tail. I have lost count of the number of times we took away the top 5 or 6 wkts and then watched helplessly as the tail scored more than the top order :facepalm: I guess it was again the function of no decent 3rd seamer since the main bowlers simply didn't have any support. Steyn with Kapil+Srinath. :--D

I would say that's not such a bad bowling attack - can take wkts on seaming/swinging conditions and can bowl over opponents in subcontinent whre you replace Prasad with another spinner.

Or better still you can go with say Ponting or McGrath, or Lara or Ambrose.

Late 90s it was specially in Sharjah. Pick up - wallop and before you realize it was a six. One truly memorable Prasad-spinner moment was the third (unofficial) test match on India's tour of SA iin 2000-01. Prasad bowling to Pollock with 9 fielders on the boundary. What does Pollock do? Smashes the slowest fast bowler in the world for a boundary despite that. :facepalm:

You are missing the point when you take it as a comparison between Tendulkar and a bowler. In fact I look at it as a compliment for Tendulkar as OP chose SRT as the poster boy for a great batsman. I treated this thread as such and have ssaid I would go with a great all-rounder over a great bowler and a great bowler over a great batsman anyday.

OR Akram' date=' Mcgrath etc.?[/quote'] Maybe, but many of those bowlers (as good as they were) were "sum of all parts" bowling in tandem with other legends in company: West Indies 80s, Ambrose/Walsh, Lillee/Thomson, McGrath/Gillespie/Warne, Akram/Waqar, Murli/Colombo pitch curators. Steyn played with Pollock in less than 10 Tests. One would say he has been a lone warrior for South Africa since Pollock's retirement. And his legendary strike rate is a testament to it. But anyways I chose Steyn because I love watching this guy perform, and I am just as big Tendu fan.

You ask the question today the answer, rather unequivocally, is Steyn. You ask the same question in 2003 WC game against Pakistan. Well the answer is well and clear Sachin. I would love to have a Steyn for India, as bowlers win matches and we solidly suck abroad. But Sachin across all formats? Man thats tough to beat. Even by Steyn. I go for Sachin.

The question was contest between Sachin and Steyn not Steyn and India. Who was the winner in that contest? A batsman who made a mockery of your fast bowling by hitting at his will.
