How highly do you rate Kallis, the batsman?

Simply because I don't rate him as high as his average suggests. Wanted to know how high the rest rates him.

You dont rate him or Dravid that high because they don't have free flowing shots, aggressions, quick scores, strokeplay, etc. You will pick 4 years of Ponting's brilliance over 8-10 years of consistency of Kallis. Kallis is nowhere in league of Sachin, Lara, but his records are not less than any of them. Also take one more thing in consideration. How many good to great bowlers Ponting faced at his peak between 2002-2006. Australia had the best bowling attack and he didn't face them. WI attack was average, England attack was average at best apart from Ashes 2005 which Australia lost, Pakistan average attack, SA good but not great with Pollock and Ntini, India below average attack, Srilanka below average attack, New Zealand average. Most great bowlers had retired or at their fall likes of Walsh, Ambrose, Wasim, Waqar, Donald, etc. The few good to great bowlers he faced were Actor always injured or out, Pollock, Ntini, Murli, and Kumble, 2 of them spinners and he struggled.

I don't get it here. Thread title - "How highly do you rate Kallis the batsmen?". Thread responses - Ponting, Dravid, Lara, Tendulkar! WTH? Can't we rate batsman - great/very good/good/average/bad without comparing with other batsmen? ? Just use the five or if you may prefer the seven point likert scale and get the god damned thing done! :dontknow:

We have 2 classes of batsmanship, one with flair and one who grit it out. Both the methods don't always work. A batsman is always known for the way he can adjust. that is something that has made Sachin so great because he has been able to respond to situations better and change in game accordingly. But, someone like Lara would always back his ability. But, you always need batsmen like Dravid, especially Dravid and Waugh. Kallis, as I said previously has been part of a very strong unit so his runs always have a lot more values attached. But, guys like Dravid and waugh, would grind you to death and they are also more useful in certain situations. But, all said and done, you cannot ignore the statistical volumes of Kallis.

So rename this thread to Kallis versus rest and cut the chase.

Kallis also has played in most bowling friendly conditions in SA. SA is the hardest place for batsmen to score runs.

Agreed. Kallis' career is pretty strange in terms of numbers. He has done excpetionally well in SA, has a better average outside home, but has a poor record in places like England and Australia.And it's not in terms of averages only. He has struggled in these 2 places. But overall, he has been a great batsman.
