Sorry to burst your bubble but the legacy is not just "scratched" but will need some serious restoration. That 100th 100 against B'desh is a joke of humongous proportions and SRT himself knows it and maybe that's why he's playing on trying to get one more 100 so that the B'desh one doesn't end up being his last. Kallis has comfortably overtaken Tendulkar as the best batsman of this generation and he's in the category of very goods along with Lara, Ponting, Sangakkara instead of 2nd behind Don a few years back. Have faith friends! He can redeem himself. 4 more innings potentially. Pray for his form! Redeem for what? So that he can haunt us again during the Aussie series as well? You have to understand that we have to blood a new player pretty soon and the longer Tendulkar stays the longer would be the pain. Now we have to see Tendulkar average 20 for some more time and then see a new player struggle to establish himself when that could have happened right now. But again as long as Tendulkar is "enjoying" his game and spending "quality vacation time" with his kids everything is fine.

So if it does comes as such, it was more accidental and incidental. What was your assessment of Sachin's future post WC 2007, when at the age of 34, he looked all but spent as an international force? Did you think back then that he had it in him to continue playing for India? If so, what level did you think he could do so? More specifically, back in 2007-08 did you think that, in the year 2010, 18 years into his international career, he is going to have his best year in test cricket yet? Assuming that you did not get all of this right back then, why should I buy your assessment now that he is done and dusted? It's not some secret, really is it? Both you and I were on this site in the time frame you are mentioning and a simple search feature would give you my views from the time if you don't remember them. But, at the time my views were that he should be given more chances and was confident in his ability to come back. Was I able to predict his exact average? Was I able to predict that in 2010 he will do really well? Quite obviously you can't expect to make such exact predictions. Just like after watching him bat last year, I thought he is done and dusted but probably has enough to score at home. Looks like I was not exact in that either and he has become a walking wicket even at home. I am not selling you any assessment, just making some observations based on watching his game and having watched it many times over many years.

Sticking around in that situation is a burden for all concerned.

He has a poor record in england too and his record against aus was poor due to quality of attack he faced at that time.

With Tendulkar's performance in that 0-8 fiasco SRT has given away that advantage big time. Kallis was always an accomplished bowler and a much better fielder (amazing in slips) and now he's ahead of Tendulkar in batting as well. SRT will be hard-pressed to overtake Kallis in any of the 3 disciplines statistically.

His average is nearly 3 points higher than SRT IIRC which suggests he's not exactly behind SRT in terms of batting. Kallis may well be the best ever cricketer there ever was behind Bradman and ahead of Sobers if Kallis' stats remain as they are.

He has 42 100s or thereabouts in Tests which shows that he's consistent and he generally always shows up for SA. Considering Kallis averaged 20 or so in his first 20-25 Tests his average of 57+ is astounding. Kallis for me has edged it in batting alone against SRT.

Sachin is just going through a loss of form .He will come out of it strongly and has 2 more years of cricket left in him. Before dropping Sachin, questions must be asked of the performance of Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh inconsistent Sehwag and Dhoni.After they are dropped we can think of Sachin's retirement. But then again Raina will come back to torment us in place of Sachin.
