Best innings against great West Indian pace attack This is my list in order of merit of the best innings ever executed against great West Indian bowling attacks.Arguably it was the best bowling attack ever in the 1980's. 1.Graham Gooch's 154 n.o.at Leeds in 1991 Scored 60% of his teams runs on a most difficult wicket in the 2nd innings when no single batsman score above 25 runs.Above all won the game for England.Reminded one of a soldier battling against all odds to win a war or a commander single-handedly reviving a sinking ship. 2.Kim Hughes 100 n.o at Melbourne in 1981-82 Scored 100 out of a total of 198 in the 1st innings.after his teem was ruling.Not once did he lose his nerves like a great commander leading a batallion in the most precarious situation.Kim Hughes superbly negotiated the uneven bounce with the skill of a surgeon performing an operation. 3.Mohinder Amarnath's 80 and 91 at Barbados in 1983 Mohinder superbly drove and hooked the great quartet with relentless courage like a soldier fighting in the Battle of Stalingrad.He displayed the clinical precision of a surgeon. 4.Alan Border's 100 and 98 n.o at Trinidad in 1984 Saved a game against all odds bating with relentless determination like a fighter pilot .Gave a lesson to those of the power of mental tenacity struggling against all odds . 5.Graham Gooch's 153 at Jamaica in 1981 One of the great exhibtion's of strokeplay ever displayed on a quick pitch. 6.Gundappa Vishwanath's 97.n.o at Madras in 1974-75 One of the most classical exhibitions of batting ever displayed which combined the artistry of a painter with the skill of a surgeon.Vishwanath superbly took Andy Roberts to the sword on afast track,scoring 97 n.o out of a total of 190.Vishy's boundaries were executed with the touch of a pianist and he dissected the most impregnable of gaps. 7.Greg Chappell's 182 n.o at Sydney in 1975-76 Greg batted with the skill of a technician in combating the fiery pace of Roberts and Holding.He gave a classical display of strokeplay. 8.Sunil Gavaskar's 236 n.o at Madras Batted like a boulder after India were precariously placed.Displayed phenomenal technical mastery against the rising ball. 9.Ian Chappell's 156 at Perth in 1975-76 One of the best ever innings on fast wicket and in a crisis .Ian scored 156 out of 328 against Roberts at his fastest.He executed some of the finest drives and hook shots. 10..Sunil Gavaskar's 90 at Ahmedabad Gavaskar mastered a difficult pitch with clinical precision brilliantly counter -attacking.One of the best innings on a bad wicket.Some of his drives were simply brilliant. 11.Steve Waugh's 200 n.o at Kingston in 1995 This innings won the Frank Worrel Trophy for Australia and elevated them to the position of the world champions of test cricket.Steve displayed great grit and composure and Australai became the 1st team to win a series in West Indies since 1973. 12.Mark Waugh's 139.n.o at Antigua in 1991 A masterly display combining great technique with agressive strokeplay.. 13.David Gower's 154 n.o at Kingston in 1981 Executed some of the most effortless strokes against the great quartet like a doctor putting a patient to ease. 14.Majid Khan's 167 at Georgetown in 1977 Batted with great grit and determination to save a game after Pakistan faced a deficit of 250 run sin the 1st innins Shared a 166 run partnership with Zaheer Abbas.Majid superbly tackled Roberts,Garner and Croft. 15.Wasim Raja's 117 n.o at Barbados in 1977 Ina record 133 run partnership with Wasim Bari almost pulled of a historic win for Pakistan,who were reeling at 158-9 in the 2nd innings. I have put Graham Goochs and Kim Hughes innings at the very top as they won the matches from a crisis and were against the great quartet.Mohinder Amarnath combated the greatest quartet in 1983 while Vishwanath's 97 n.o was a match-winning knock.The innings of Gavaskar and the Chappell brothers were not against the quartet but yet against the ;lethal pace of Holding and Roberts.The Waugh brother's negotiated the likes of Ambrose,Walsh and Bishop while David Gower's 150 was against the great quartet.Vishy's knock at Madras was added because Roberts was at his fastest on a fiery pitch. I have not included innings against the weaker West Indian attacks of the likes of Keith Boyce,Vanburn Holder, or the 1978-79 attack that toured India spearheaded by Sylvester Clarke.The 1970-71 and 1978-79 attacks which bowled against India were hardly lethal in comparison with the best Caribbean bowling attacks.Thta is why I have not added Gavaskar's hundreds scored in those serioes like his 220 at Trinidad and his 205 at Mumbai.

yeah, dammit! i taped it at the time, but lost it, about 3 years ago i finally tracked down highlights, then incredibly i lost it again, even i cant believe it. wisden rated it the 12th best innings of all time, or something.
