What do you mean by haunting Gambit? Do you mean a tune that stays with you or do you mean a tune that you generally would like to hear late in the evenings, a tune that gives you a eerie feeling, a little hair raising experience like that Madan Mohan goldie Zara dekh le aakar parwaane Teri kaunsi hai manzil Kahin deep jale kahin dil or another gem, this time from LP in Karz, Bewafa yaar ne apne mehboob se aisha dhokha kiya (loveeeeeeeeeeee the haunting guitar played right here......) ek haseen thi ek deeewana tha xxx PS: How can you not like Rafi? His qawwali - Aaj hum jaise jigar waale kahan, zakham khaaya hai tab huye hain jawaan - is itself something none of his contemprory(including KK) could dish out. Or that eclectic bohemian - Barbaadiyon ka shok manan fijool tha..barbadiyon ka jashn manaata chala gaya, har fikr ko dhuyein mein...

Yess, Lurker, that is one of the many great songs by Rafi. I have already included that in my list.
The Outsider
No one can deny that Kishore Da was the best that there ever was ... I am a huge fan of Kishore Kumar but as far as songs with a heavy classical base are concerned, Rafi/Manna Dey/Talat Mehmood all score hugely above him. Comparing Kishore with Rafi/Manna dey/Talat will be like comparing a legend fast bowler with a legend spinner. Kishore has his own unique flow and style while singing. Not to mention he was an actor, director, comedian as well. PS: Did anyone came across this song -- Chelha Cheelha Chilla Kajari Sunai, Kaanv Kaanv Kauwa bhi Dholak Bajaaye.....Please give links/upload if you have -- I have only heard this once. The Outsider
Very true for Manna Dey and Talat Mahmood . I am not so sure about Rafi . Check out some of his qawallis, specially : 1. Na to Karvaan Ki Talaash Hai/Ye Ishq Ishq Hai Ishq Ishq- Barsaat Ki Raat 2. Waqif Hoon Khoob Ishq Ke - Bahu Begum Both are sung by Manna Dey and Rafi, so would offer are nice perspective. Lurker
Speaking of Rafi and haunting tunes here are a few of haunting songs from Rafi stable: 1) This one is by Shankar Jaikishen with lyrics by that supreme poet Shailendra Yaad na jaaye, beete dinon ki Jaake na aaye jo din Dil kyun bulaaye unhein dil kyun bulaaye.... (For a man who loved life so much Shailendra was smitten by death, as witnessed in above song of that classic - Ke marke bhi kissi yaad aayenge, kissi ki aankhon mein muskuraayenge..kahega phool har kali se baar baar..jeena issi ka naam hai) 2) This one from that underrated duo Kalyanji Anandji. Tumhein hum dhoondhte hain humein dil dhoondta hai na manzil hai koi na koi raasta hai... Akele hain chale aao jehan ho kahan awaaz dein tumko kahan ho? 3) This one would perhaps not qualify so much but in has that "timelessness" that comes with a haunting songs. A masterpice of two stalwarts - Sahir & Khayaam Haalat ke teeron se chalni hai badan apne paas aao to seenon ke kuch dard to bhar jaayein Simti huyi ye ghadiyaan phir se na bikhar jaayein. 4) This one is old...as in Old one...from 1950s..movie Halaku. another Shankar-Jaikishen-Shailendra gem Aaja ke intezaar mein jaane ko hai bahaar bhi tere bagair jindagi dard ban ke rah gayi. 5) Another song with a twist has to be the RD Burman-Majrooh gem from Yaadon ki Baraat. Which one of us has not heard/seen this song and pictured themselves in there somewhere? O kahne waale mujhko farebi kaun farebi hai yeh bata woh jisne ghum liya pyaar ki qaatir ya jisne pyaar ko bech diya.. nasha daulat ka aisa bhi kya, ke tujhe kuch bhi yaad nahin Kya hua tera waadaa. Few right off my head. xxx

Gambit
What do you mean by haunting Gambit? Do you mean a tune that stays with you or do you mean a tune that you generally would like to hear late in the evenings, a tune that gives you a eerie feeling, a little hair raising experience like that Madan Mohan goldie Zara dekh le aakar parwaane Teri kaunsi hai manzil Kahin deep jale kahin dil or another gem, this time from LP in Karz, Bewafa yaar ne apne mehboob se aisha dhokha kiya (loveeeeeeeeeeee the haunting guitar played right here......) ek haseen thi ek deeewana tha xxx Open to interpretation yaar. For me, it's a tune, usually mournful/pensive/nostalgic/ pining for something better in life. Another one of my favourites is : Kabhi door jab din dhal jaye (Anand) PS: How can you not like Rafi? His qawwali - Aaj hum jaise jigar waale kahan, zakham khaaya hai tab huye hain jawaan - is itself something none of his contemprory(including KK) could dish out. Or that eclectic bohemian - Barbaadiyon ka shok manan fijool tha..barbadiyon ka jashn manaata chala gaya, har fikr ko dhuyein mein... There is a certain dated feel about his voice. No zip, no soul, no dard.
Lurker
There is a certain dated feel about his voice. No zip, no soul, no dard. No soul? Kar chale hum fida jaanon tan saathiyon ab tumhare hawaale watan saathiyon. Sad songs ? Yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye to kya hai? Teli galiyon mein na rakhenge kadam aaj ke baad Eil dil ke tukde hazaar huye koi yehan gira koi wehan gira Pathar ke sanam tujhe humne mohabbat ka khuda maana Dil ne phir yaad kiya sard si lehraayi hai. Sau baar janam lenge sau baar fanaa honge.. Personal taste I suppose. xxx
The Outsider
In my experience, most people develop an instant liking to Kishore Kumar's songs and Rafi is more of an acquired taste possibly because some of the tunes and lyrics of his songs are not very easy to grasp instantly.
