Muloghonto Posted February 18, 2013 Posted February 18, 2013 I've been living in Canada/Washington for well over 20 years now and this is just my observation: 1. 'white people' divorce a lot more than 'non-whites' ( i am excluding Black folks here, there arn't that many in Canada/Washington for me to comment on). 2. Those white people who do stay married (50% or less after 5 years), tend to have far stronger and emotionally involved relationships than desis/chinese/immigrants etc. This, IMO, is because white people mostly get married on the 'lets take it one step at a time and the possibilities are limitless' approach, while we tend to have steriotyped ideas of what we are 'supposed to be' as husbands/wives and inadvertantly, end up building 'obligatory walls' in our relationships. I can't think of a single happily married brown couple here who would go to their spouse and say 'honey, sex life has gone stale for the last decade, i think we should go swap partners once in a while and see how it works'. On the other hand, i do know western couples who are comfortable enough to do so. IMO, this is because white people don't tend to equate marriage with sexuality (unless you go down south USA/prairie province bible belts etc) and to them, the idea of getting married without being in a sexually fulfilling relationship is akin to buying a house without ever seeing it in person- rather unthinkable. And i would agree with this perspective- i would rather see my son & daughter going through a few failed relationships (learning experience) and even a failed marriage or two and then find their lifemates than be completely clueless about relationships, sexuality, etc. and get stuck in a rather unfulfilling relationship. On a personal note, i didn't get married till i was 33. Even then, i was younger than many of my white buddies ( virtually none of the white guys i know got married before 27/28, most averaged around 35 and a couple have just got married in their early 40s). I am personally glad i waited, for i cannot think why my wife would've found my 25 year old self attractive or even compatible and i know if i had hooked up with her 5 years earlier, i wouldn't have found her as attractive as i found her later on personality aspects. IMO, early/mid 30s is the ideal age to get married- you know so much more about yourself and your wants, goals, desires and outlook on life are so much more mature than they are in their early/mid 20s.
