Subroto Bannerjee, VCA part ways

NAGPUR: Ex-India pacer and fast bowling coach Subroto Bannerjee and his employers Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) have decided to part ways. Bannerjee joined the VCA's Residential Academy four years ago along with Australian Neil D'Costa and Sulakshan Kulkarni. D'Costa and Kulkarni left in 2011 while Bannerjee was looking after the fast bowlers of different categories since then. He also accompanied the team during their Ranji Trophy campaign last season. "It was a great learning experience for me. I enjoyed my tenure here in Nagpur and I feel it's the right time to part the ways. I have got some exciting and challenging offers. Let's see what happens. I am thankful to VCA, Mr Shashank Manohar and Prashant Vaidya for providing me the opportunity to work with the talented group of boys," Bannerjee confirmed the news to TOI. Bannerjee was great with Vidarbha's fast bowling unit. He played a crucial part in Umesh Yadav's rise. When Bannerjee joined VCA, Yadav was in the midst of his maiden first class season. Bannerjee fine tuned Yadav's skills without compromising on his pace and the results are there for everyone to see. Yadav is one of the quickest bowlers in the country and has also learned to move the ball both ways. "It's great to see his rise. I was excited too see him when I came here. After Srinath, he is the quickest I have seen in India. He always had that talent and it was great to work with him. Umesh is a good student of the game and will surely go a long way," Bannerjee, who has also worked with Mumbai Indians, said. Bannerjee is excited with fast bowling unit of Vidarbha. "I feel our fast bowlers have done extremely well in some tough conditions. Shreekant (Wagh) has come a long way since last four years and he has the talent to go all the way. Sandeep (Singh) has matured with the age and that is reflecting in his performance. Amol (Jungade) has shown the promise while the likes of Ravi Thakur, Swapnil Bandiwar too are good prospects. The rise of Siddhesh Neral is good news for Vidarbha. He has done exceptionally well in his category and I am confident he will deliver the goods at the first class level," Bannerjee said. Bannerjee also praised the work VCA has been doing to promote the game in the region. "If you see, talent is coming from all parts of Vidarbha. There are many who come from smaller places. VCA is providing great facilities and guidance to the players. It's up to them to take the advantage. It was great to see senior team doing well in Ranji Trophy Elite level while U-19 too qualified for the EIite group next year. Other teams too did well," said Bannerjee.

NAGPUR: In his recent column, former India batsman Sanjay Manjrekar stressed about finding more bowlers like Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. Unlike other countries, India hasn't produced out and out quick bowlers on a regular basis. However, time and again, India has found bowlers who can swing the ball at decent pace to trouble the batsmen. Bhuvanheshwar, along with his city mate Praveen Kumar, has relied more on swing rather than pace. Both have been very successful so far. Much like both Kumars, Vidarbha pacer Siddhesh Neral too has the ability to move the ball both ways. While he was little raw last year, he has been a revelation this season for Vidarbha. If Vidarbha qualified for Elite Group after four years, Neral was definitely one of the reasons for it. With only final of the Cooch Behar remains to be played, this 18-year-old is the highest wicket-taker in the country. Neral has taken 36 wickets at an impressive average of 16.30. What's more impressive is his strike rate—he takes wicket at every 36 balls. He emulated the feat of left-arm pacer Vikas Yadav and offie Mohd Karim, both of whom were highest wicket takers in the country when they played Cooch Behar Trophy. This, however, is the best performance by any Vidarbha bowler in this category. Mumbai's Akash Parkar is still three wickets behind Neral and with final remaining; he might well take over Vidarbha pacer. However, that doesn't take anything away from Neral. "When I came here last year, Siddhesh was the first one I heard about. Subroto Bannerje told me about Siddhesh and when we started working, I found him very effective. He is a smart cricketer, who knows how to work the batsman out. He doesn't bother about the conditions and always gives his 100%. It's reward of the hard work he has put in for the last couple of years. To finish the season on top of wicket-taking list is phenomenal," Vidarbha U-19 coach Kiran Powar told TOI. Unlike last year, where Neral had experienced partners, this year was different. Vidarbha banked upon him to deliver the goods. He didn't disappoint the team management and gave early breakthrough in every match. "He seems to be a matured cricketer who knows what to expect of him. You don't need to tell him what to do. He is only 18 and from here, he will only improve. Now that he has done well in U-19, he should carry that confidence and work hard. He needs to work on a few areas and if does that, he can serve Vidarbha for long," Powar added. With more Ranji Trophy matches now, Vidarbha need to have a bigger pool of pace bowlers to support Sandeep Singh, Shreekant Wagh and Amol Jungade. Neral certainly has the ability and attitude to be there, provided he works hard.

Good to learn about such talents oozing out of Vidharbha ... Hopefully someone mentors these youngsters and they are brought into the mix of seniors in the side.
