Lara and Sachin scored runs when almost all opposition had all time great bowlers and when run scoring was much harder in 90s.Ponting and Dravid scored mostly 2000 when the batting was much easier and never really faced the all-time great bowlers that much.

I think the OP has a point. We celebrate Sachin as the greatest ever because he has 100 100s, but then a 100 doesn't win you test matches, but a 200 or a 300 might. It is purely a man-made milestone that we see on a player's stats page, but then it could so easily have been "number of 200s" and "number of 300s", rather than "number of 50s" and "number of 100s". The one metric that is independent of these man-made milestones is the batting average, and while Sachin's is good, it isn't the best. That Sachin has scored more runs that anybody else is a sign of longevity, fitness and desire to play. If one believes those things count in the judge of the greatness of a batsman, then Sachin is the best there will ever be. Its all subjective in the end.
