Dancing in the middle of the ground which is to stage an Ind Aus ODI

Do these "fans" understand cricket? Do they respect cricket and dancing on cricket pitches? It was absolutely chaotic once the crowd broke through the barricade and started chasing the players. The lap of honour was immediately stopped and the policemen escorted the players to safety. Some members of the crowd also started dancing and jumping in the middle of the ground which is to stage the seventh and final One-Day International between India 26slide8.jpgThe victory lap of the triumphant Indian Twenty20 World Cup team ended in a near-fiasco due to a surging crowd and had to be called off after the players had run less than half the perimeter of the ground. The 35,000-strong crowd at the stadium, which braved inclement weather and sat through for nearly four hours for the team's felicitation function to commence, suddenly lost its patience and broke down one section of the fencing on the south western part of the ground when the team members started the victory lap holding aloft the tricolour.

Yoda, They were not "allowed" to. They are doing a mass breakdown of security cordon, and running through BECAUSE they know that if someone attacks them, they will claim "oooh...police arrogance" and what not. They violate basic decency but they will not bat an eyelid before protesting police arrogance. These are not "cricket fans"...I doubt if they even understand a pitch is a very delicate thing that needs to be nurtured and not "danced upon". These are not fans - but folks who are jumping in mass hysteria. I am ashamed at the kind of stupid overreaction that is happening everywhere. Guess I better stop reading the news articles, and just wait till ODI-1 starts for "cricket" and not "hype".

You can always expect these sort of behaviors from people who are not as well educated as some of us are. It's just sheer joy, not hysteria. You must have watched the T.V. genuine . Of course not controlled by civic sense. What you don't expect to see is the Politicians taking center stage rather than letting the cricketers take the front row, that seemed to me more of a problem than the breaking of the barricades. It smacked of selfishness, opportunism, and absolutely stupid regionalism at that place. Instead what these people exhibited only showed their genuine involvement with the game and the cricketers, they just lack the normal restraint that you and i practice . It's just restraint that was missing there.

CRICKET FANS indeed...Pitiable... c11.jpg The damaged practice wickets in front of Sunil Gavaskar stand Perhaps Dilip Vengsarkar, chairman of the national selection committee, would like to take a fresh look at the part of the Wankhede stadium that’s seen in the picture on this page. On Thursday evening, Vengsarkar told the Press Trust of Indiaad_22.gif that "there was no cause for concern" over the damage caused to the Wankhede stadium by frenzied fans during the felicitation function for Dhoni's boys on Wednesday, and the ground would be "ready" for the Indiaad_22.gif-Australia one-dayer on October 17. The picture tells a different story though: the ground has been so ruined by the "cricket-crazy crowd" that Mumbai Cricket Association officials say, off the record of course, that the damage is "near-irreparable" before the ODI game. The fans who broke barricades to enter the ground as the T20 World Cup-winning team started its victory lap have ripped off all the grass on the outfield near the Garware Stand (at the Churchgate end), ruined six practice pitches in front of the Sunil Gavaskar Stand (East Stand) and even caused some harm to the main square which has the wickets on which matches are played. MCA officials said the destruction has undone all the work they have been doing since June to get the ground ready for the match. “It’s all ruined. We have been working for the last four months to get the green in shape. The grass takes almost two months to grow and settle. Now that it has been ripped off, the outfield near the Garware Stand will be bare on match day,†an MCA official who did not wish to be named said. The practice wickets near the East Stand too can’t be set right on time, though the damage to the central square that has the match wickets was limited, the official said. Oddly, Vengsarkar himself told PTI on Thursday afternoon that “I am afraid the six practice wickets cannot be repaired fully in time†but retracted the statement late evening. Vengsarkar had also said that the crowd had “trampled on the wickets.†Sudhir Naik, the head curator who looks after the ground, looked very depressed on Thursday, and when asked to react to the condition of the ground, his eyes welled up. However, for reasons best known to him, he refused to comment. Sources though said Naik and others responsible for taking care of the ground were not even allowed to enter the stadium during the felicitation function on Wednesday. Netas, most of them belonging to BCCI boss Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party, hogged all the attention all through the function, and when the 30,000-strong crowd ran amok, security personnel were forced to escort the politicians and leave the ground to the mob. “We can’t do anything about the ground’s condition now. The organisers should have thought before organising such an event so close to a scheduled international match,†an obviously upset MCA official said.
