Without Modi at the helm' date= they cannot get substantial numbers - heck there may even be a grassroots revolt in the party. The cadre is solidly behind him. and with Modi at the helm they won't get allies post poll. Its a dilemma which can only be solved by not projecting anyone as the PM candidate but having Modi as the unofficial leader.

Bihar goes to polls in 2015 - Nitish won't touch a Modi led BJP at any cost because it would lead to his Muslim votes shifting to Lalu who is already making a comeback. West Bengal goes to polls in 2016 and UP in 2017 so the regional parties ahve to look at these elections before deciding who to back at the National Level.

It will be advantage for them as people will likely to vote a party which is having a say in center's policy making. Also its 1.5 to 2 years away so lot of things can happen in between.
