Kuldeep Yadav stars with six-wicket haul

India Under-19 were trailing by 142 runs with eight wickets in hand at stumps on Day 1 of the second four-day match against Sri Lanka Under-19, after spinning the opposition out for 212. Left-arm spinner, Kuldeep Yadav was the chief architect of the SL downfall at the Welagedara Stadium in Kurunegala. He finished with impressive figures of 17.2-3-38-6 in the first innings. Earlier, after SL U19 opted to bat first, pacer Atul Singh provided early breakthroughs by claiming the hosts’ openers, while Pankaj Jaiswal dismissed Sadeera Samarawickrama to leave SL on 75 for the loss of three wickets. Yadav then ran through the rest of the line-up, while Aamir Gani chipped in with the wicket of Priyamal Perera, who presented some late resistance lower down the order with a 68-ball 36. Even as wickets fell in quick succession, No.3 bat, Kavindu Kulasekara held up one end with a gritty knock to help the home team past the 200-run mark. His run in the middle was finally ended for 84 off 180 balls, when Yadav trapped the batsman leg-before. In response, the Indian colts were 70 for the loss of two wickets. The visitors lost both their openers with 59 runs on the board. Akhil Herwadkar was the first to be sent back for eight by AK Tyronne, while Shubham Khajuria was dismissed for 36 by Chamika Karunaratne. When play ended, Vijay Zol and Sanju Samson were batting on 12 and five respectively. Cricket Australia's (CA) Youth Selection Panel (YSP) on Wednesday announced a 14-member Australian Under-19 squad to compete in the U-19 Quad Series in India, beginning from September 23. Australia will compete against India, South Africa and Zimbabwe in the Quad Series, in preparation for next February's ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in Dubai. The Australian squad comprises some emerging talents, including Ben McDermott, son of former Australian fast--bowler Craig; 2013 U19 National Championship leading wicket--taker Cameron Valente; and 16--year--old batsman Jake Doran, who was the standout of the recently--played U19 International Series in Darwin with a spectacular average of 195. CA National Talent Manager Greg Chappell said: "This Quad Series in India is part of our preparation for next year's ICC Under--19 Cricket World Cup. This series continues our comprehensive U--19 program to ensure our emerging talent is exposed to international competition and conditions that challenge and build our players technically and mentally." "A number of these players have already had a taste of international cricket against top quality opposition. This year, our U--19s played New Zealand in New Zealand, as well as India in Darwin. Matthew Fotia also worked with Glenn McGrath at his MRF Pace Foundation academy in India. We are pleased with the balance of this 14--player squad to compete in the Quad Series in India. This squad contains a good balance of left and right--handed batsmen, with aggressive players and batsmen that can build partnerships and anchor our innings." Zol scores Ton as India take huge lead on Day 2

After India Under-19 declared their innings on 393 for eight in the last session the Sri Lanka Under 19 were 11 without loss when stumps were called. The home team were trailing by 170 runs with all wickets intact at the end of second day’s play of the ongoing four-day encounter in the island nation. After India had lost both their openers early in the innings on the first day, Vijay Zol and Sanju Samson built a 160-run partnership for the third wicket to take the visitors past SL U19’s first innings total and ensure a platform for a lead. Lakshan Jayasinghe broke the stand by dismissing Samson for 70. With the score on 219 for three, Shreyas Iyer then joined his captain to build on the lead. Zol carried on his sublime form and scored a patient century – 128 off 204 – before being sent back by Binura Fernando. The Indian colts lost wicketkeeper Ankush Bains a bit later but Iyer and Aamir Gani added 98 runs until Priyamal Perera struck to end the partnership. Iyer who had made a valuable 84, edged the ball to the keeper and had to walk back. The bowler then trapped Kuldeep Yadav lbw off the next ball but was denied a hat-trick. And later in the same over Gani was run out for 41. With three wickets falling in the 100th over at 392 for eight, lower-order batsmen Atul Singh and Chama Milind came in to bat but were yet to open their accounts when the visitors deiced to declare their innings and inserted Sri Lanka U19 to bat at the *** end of the second day. With 393 for eight the Zol-led side had a sizeable lead as they took the field in the last session. Openers Hashan Dumindu and Minod Bhanuka then saw SL through six overs and putting up 11 runs before calling it a day.

Mendis, Samarawickrama fifties keep hosts afloat on Day 3

The Sri Lanka Under-19 were leading by 64 runs with five wickets in hand in the second innings at the end of third day’s play in the second four-day match against India Under-19. The home team, who were trailing by 170 runs when played ended on Day 2, carefully worked towards overcoming the deficit and taking a marginal lead. Resuming their innings on 11 for no loss, they lost their opener Minod Bhanuka after adding just 16 runs to the overnight score. Hashan Dumindu and Kavindu Kuasekara then watchfully played out the first session taking SL U19 to 66 without losing more wickets before lunch. While Kulasekara was the first to depart in the second session, followed by Dumindu 15 overs later, the middle order rallied on to help the hosts take a lead. Skipper Kusal Mendis played a diligently en route his 82-ball 65, before being sent back by Chama Milind. Sadeera Samarawickrama continued to anchor the innings after the captain’s dismissal and was unbeaten on 53 off 122 balls at stumps. He was ably supported by lower-order bat Priyamal Perera, who remained unbeaten on 40 off 86 balls to help take SL U19 to 245 for the loss of five wickets when stumps were called. Milind took three of the five opposition wickets that fell on Day 3, while Pankaj Jaiswal and Aamir Gani took a wicket each. Colts draw second match, series

The second four-day encounter between India Under-19 and Sri Lanka Under-19 ended in a draw at the Welagedara Stadium in Kurunegala. As a result, the two-match series also ended in a draw. Earlier, resuming their innings on 245 for the loss of five wickets, Sri Lanka Under-19 went on to pile 499 runs on the last day of the game, before being bowled out in the second innings. Priyamal Perera was the first to be removed on the last day, after adding just one run to his overnight score. Sadeera Samarawickrama was sent back for 63 by Chama Milind to leave the home team on 258 for seven. But the Indian colts could not wrap up the last three wickets as Binura Fernanado and AK Tyronne hammered centuries. The two batsmen were on song and garnered runs while the visitors struggled to break the partnership. It was only when Tyronne was run out for 123 that India got a breather. But by then the home team had posted 446 runs. Although the last two wickets soon followed, Fernando remained unbeaten on 100. Facing a mammoth 319, India U19 took guard later in the day and made 113 for the loss of three wickets in 27 overs, until the game ended without result. Perera claimed both the India U19 openers, while Lakshan Jayasinghe claimed Ankush Bains who came in at No.3 in place of captain Vijay Zol. Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson were not out on 26 and 23 respectively when the match ended.
