Seven students taken ill in Goa after eating midday meal PANAJI: After Bihar and Tamil Nadu, it is Goa's turn to enter the list of notorious states where students have taken seriously ill after consuming midday meals. On Friday morning, seven students complained of nausea and later began vomiting after consuming the midday meal at a government-aided school in Usgao, in the central region of the state. In the school, which runs classes from kindergarten to the high school level, the students began falling ill within an hour of consuming the meal in the school. The students are being treated at the government-run infectious diseases hospital in Ponda, about 30km from Panaji. This is not the first such incident in the coastal state. Within days of the new academic year beginning in June, 86 school students in Goa's southern most end Canacona took ill after consuming the midday meal and had to be hospitalized. Though the self help group responsible for the supply was suspended immediately by the state government authorities, parents at the government-aided school have since refused midday meals. The food and drugs administration in Goa later slapped notices on nine self help groups for cooking midday meals in unhygienic conditions. Goa has been pulled up by the Union human resource development ministry several times for poor monitoring of the scheme.

Performance Motor Oil Additives A second class of additives includes those compounds that improve the oil’s performance. Pour point depressants, which are not required in high quality synthetics due to their low temperature capabilities, enable lubricants to flow at lower temperatures by modifying wax crystal formation, thereby reducing interlocking. The compounds used for this function include alkylated napthalene and phenolic polymers, polymethacrylates, and certain copolymer esters. Seal swell agents help to swell elastomeric seals by causing a chemical reaction in the elastomer. Organic phosphates and aromatic hydrocarbons are sometimes used to achieve this effect. Along with some other compounds, it's used to improve performance, reduce friction, and used to cause the seal swell effect. The oil we use for the scrambler bikes has a lot of added addictives. These oil addictives and swell effect could be a difference while racing. Here's another source, http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/basic-lubrication-design/

This does not indicate "high amounts" like you said earlier does it?
High enough to be toxic. A few milligrams will make difference. High amount here is not in literal litres. Just like a paracetamol tablet is has very less paracetamol compound.

Of course, I am not talking absolute numbers - it is relative. What is the amount required for acute organophosphate poisoning versus the one found in engine lubricant oil?

What is the amount required for acute organophosphate poisoning versus the one found in engine lubricant oil?[/quote'] I dont know about the amount, but the engine oil will cause acute poisoning. Esp, a used engine oil will have saturated organic compounds like phosphorous and sulfur, which is higly toxic. There are few cases, where dogs have died by this kind of phophate poisoning, when they drink water in roadsides that has the leaked oil from the cars. saturated organic compounds - it reduces friction very well, which is why in new cars, a mixture of old oil and new oil.

Can you cook vegetables using lubricant engine oil? I am not sure about it at all.

^ The boiling point and smoking points of lubricants are much higher than cooking oil. Surprizingly, cooking oil is relatively highly flammable than engine oil. Any oil can cook. A hot lubricant once cooked my frnds toe. Engine oils are just non-edible.

The main purpose of a lubricating engine oil is to "lubricate" and hence preserve it's properties even at high temperatures/pressures of the engine. Anyways lubricant engine oil seems to be a highly unlikely source of a mix up considering various other factors.

Read my post #56. It could be mixed on purpose.

I read it but the use of lubricant engine oil when insecticides are readily and easily available (cheaper too) looks unlikely.

So, my educated guess was correct. Traces of insecticide found in food sample, says forensic report http://www.ndtv.com/article/india/bihar-mid-day-meal-tragedy-traces-of-insecticide-found-in-sample-says-forensic-report-394786

"The content found was five times more when compared to the sample available in the market. It is a matter of investigation that how it came into the food," said Ravindra Kumar, Additional Director General of Police (ADG), Patna.

Secret BJP-RJD deal in blasts, school meal tragedy: Nitish

Alleging a conspiracy behind the mid-day meal tragedy in Bihar, chief minister Nitish Kumar has alleged that BJP and RJD had a "secret understanding" to derive political mileage from the incident. "The Forensic Science Laboratory, which highlights the presence of pesticide in the mid-day meal, has confirmed our apprehensions about a conspiracy behind the tragedy at a school in Saran last week", he told a meeting of party MPs, MLAs and office-bearers on Monday as part of Mission 2014 Lok Sabha elections. The chief minister charged "an understanding between BJP and RJD was very much visible both after Bodh Gaya blasts and Chhapra mid-day meal tragedy" as the two parties had called bandhs on the same after the two incidents, state JD(U) spokesman Rajeev Ranjan quoted him as saying. "RJD and BJP had called bandh together on both the occasions and this confirms the secret understanding between them", Kumar said. This was the first time that Kumar had spoken on the mid-day meal tragedy which claimed 23 lives. He said he is apprehending that more such incidents will take place as part of the opposition's efforts to destabilize his government and asked the partymen to be prepared for it. He alleged BJP was upset over losing power in Bihar the breakup of its coalition with JD(U) and the saffron party, along with RJD, "is busy fomenting instability against our government". "They are testing my patience but I will not move away from the chosen path", Kumar said, adding "Bihar's mandate was for development and we shall continue to move ahead along that path", Without naming the Lalu Prasad-led party, Bihar education minister PK Shahi hinted at the role of RJD in the Chapra incident, saying "the husband of the school principal is an active member of the party (RJD)".
