diga Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Union rural development minister Jairam Ramesh described an obese lady doctor as a "roadroller" at the inauguration of an eye camp in Latehar on Tuesday. Although he used the phrase while appreciating her diligence, there were arched eyebrows when Jairam said he "sympathized with her husband". "Dr Bharti is not only physically stout, but she is like a roadroller that can crush every problem coming her way," said Jairam (in Hindi, he said, "Dr Bharti dekhne me bhi kuch tagdi hain aur kaam bhi aisa karti hain road roller ki maafik"). He added, "Her husband (Dr BP Kashyap, who is also an eye specialist) should be awarded Padma Vibhushan." Talking to TOI, the doctor said the minister was speaking on a lighter note and she did not take offence. "I could read the wit and humour in his comments and it should not be seen as a personal comment on a lady doctor," she said, adding that the minister had made some funny but logical comments on previous occasions as well. " 'The Indian bureaucracy is like a wild animal and Dr Kashyap tackles them efficiently' was his comment when I was hosting the eye camp in Manoharpur," Bharti said. She added that he had once also called her a toofan (storm).
