I think late 90's Zimbabwe is hard to really compare because their best player was a keeper batsman and an allrounder. You can't compare late 90's Zimbabwe to any team.

Well if you are taling about tests then maybe you have a point. Tests are mainly about quality pace bowlers which Australia have but Zimbabwe were very good in LOIs. Difference is that zimbabwe back then played with one of the better teams the world has ever seen compared to these days where you barely see the best XI being fielded due to : Injury problem/Rest/Specialist in another format/freelancers.

I think at that time (99) they weren't as many top teams as they were later on or to phrase it better the standard wasn't as great. South Africa were the best on paper with Kluesner, Pollock, Cronje, Gibbs, Boucher, Donald and Kirsten. Australia and Pakistan were good but the standard wasn't as great as I would say mid 2000's or even now.

Cricketics Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Zimbabwe weren't minnows back then, but still it was a pretty big result back then because Zimbabwe weren't considered the TOP 5 side even with their usual brilliant performances in ODI tournaments. Also, them winning away from home and that too the series was a big big news back then. So i don't really disagree with the OP that it was big defeat for Pakistan, but also would agree that Zimbabwe weren't minnows. Their consistent ODI performances was the one which considered them a respectable cricketing nation back then.

Yeah the weird guy was a good spinner troubled some the Indian bats I think... that was probably the best Zimboks team ever..... seem to declined quite a lot since then. They had Paul Strang as their spinner and Bryan Strang was their quickie. The had Guy and Andy Whittall, Andy and Grant Flower and Gavin and I think it was James Rennie.

Might have easily reduced Pak to 2 - 0 in Tests. I remember they gave India a run for thir money in ODI series in SA, but then India was also a shite team back then, batting totally reliant on Tendlya n Gang. Also I think that team had some genuine quality players not bits n pieces cricketers like current minnow teams including Zimb.

Australia and Pakistan were good but the standard wasn't as great as I would say mid 2000's or even now. In 2003 WC, Zimbabwe looked like a good side to even win the World Cup. They performed well in group stages
