Kanpur to host final West Indies ODI after 4 years

International cricket will return to Kanpur after a four-year gap as the BCCI picked Green Park stadium to host the final ODI between India and West Indies scheduled for November 27. In the original itinerary released on October 15, the BCCI had listed both Baroda and Kanpur as likely venue for the game. It is understood that the a team of BCCI officials, including its game development manager Ratnakar Shetty, operations manager Suru Nayak and, initially, along with West Indies team manager Richie Richardson, had conducted a recce of Green Park and were satisfied with the facilities and the ground. Taposh Chatterjee, the central zone member on BCCI's ground and pitches committee, is expected to visit Kanpur early next week to finalise the pitch preparations for the match. Even though Green Park is equipped with floodlights, the decision about whether the match could be played under lights would be taken later. It is not entirely clear exactly why Kanpur was picked ahead of Bardoa in the absence of any official media release from the BCCI. A team of BCCI officials had visited Baroda to conduct an inspection, but Sanjay Patel, the Bardoa Cricket Association secretary, who also is the BCCI secretary, could not be reached for a comment. The previous time Kanpur played host to an international was in 2009, for the second Test of Sri Lanka series in November. Green Park is the only Test venue in India not to be owned by the concerned state association (Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association) - it is owned by the state government. The last time Green Park came close to hosting an international match was in December 2012 when it was a favourite to host the Test match against Australia but was ruled out after Cricket Australia was dissatisfied with the dressing room as well as the team hotel following an inspection.

Pathetic ground with pathetic facilities both for players and the crowd. Doesn't deserve to host international games. Wonder whatever happened to the BCCI policy of no matches to associations not having their own stadiums. Obviously Rajiv Shukla's proximity to Srini is at work.

i remember kanpur for the drawn test vs saf in 2004 where early morning fog caused delays and saf made 500 in more than 2 days with snails pace and the other was when our spinners ate safrica on day 3 to level the series in 08

and people question why uttar pradesh does not have an ipl franchise. if what sane indian says is true then its a big joke India''s largest state does not have a single stadium worthy of international cricket..... The second largest maharashtra has 5 international stadiums.

^ UP might have plenty of icon players. Bhuvi Raina Praveen Kumar. Mostly will be Raina. Quite frankly its a miracle that UP have produced the players who had gone on to play for India. All i am saying is i hope those left wing IPL hating scum in the Indian media understand why franchises are concentrated primarily to the west of the country. Its not some big conspiracy. It also point to a larger question which goes beyond sport. Some states are run well relative to others. All this hype about rich in India getting richer and poor getting poorer is more a case some states getting richer and some others staying poor as **** due to electing incapable leaders. Maybe this Shukla needs to actually convince Akilesh "law and order" Yadav to actually sell this to the BCCI or lease it for 100 years. I am sure Shukla has the means to bribe Mr Yadav. That still leaves the airport which is needed for the franchise. Its heartbreaking to see how sad the state of affairs are. I for one would love to see an IPL franchise in UP and Bihar and even MP

But this time I think it will be ready on time for the match.
