Tiger80 Posted November 12, 2013 Posted November 12, 2013 NEW DELHI: On Monday night, three women-Vandana Dhir (48), Bira Thoibi (23) and Jagriti Singh (36)-landed at jail number 6 in Tihar. These women, belonging to the upper middle class, have all been accused of torturing their maids. Jagriti tops the list with allegations of beating her maid to death, while the other two have been accused of causing serious injury. All the three have also been accused of keeping minors as helps and all three have been denied bail. While Dhir and Thoibi have been there for about a month and a half, Jagriti joined them on Monday evening. The barracks of jail number 6 has housed high-profile people like Kanimozhi. Jagriti could barely have her dinner and clutched her head in despair on being led into the jail, a source said. The similarity doesn't end here. All the three were professionals: Dhir worked as the corporate communications director for India and South Asia at French engineering giant Alstom; Thoibi was an air hostess with Air India, and Jagriti was a senior dental surgeon at RML Hospital. For Delhi Police, these were not the usual criminals. Much to the cops' bafflement, they were dealing with educated women accused of heinous crimes. "We have arrested high-profile women in connection with white-collar crimes. They were booked for cheating or being part of a conspiracy; allegations of murder, attempt to murder and torture were rare," says an officer. Vandna Dhir had a successful career and an ailing mother who was mostly confined to her room. Her 13-year-old maid was her only company and she faced great torture at her the hands. The little girl was allegedly made to do the cleaning, dusting and washing and got assaulted with knives and sticks in return. The trio accepted during questioning that living alone had made them frustrated and depressed, and the anger was vented out on the maids. Jagriti accused her husband of abandoning her. She claimed to have retreated into her flat. Her career, and not the brutality, was on her mind, at the time of being arrested, sources said. Thoibi, police said, was surprised by her arrest at the airport a fortnight ago. She had not imagined that her 12-year-old maid, whom she had brought to Delhi through her sister, would escape from confinement and make the headlines.
