Why did spinners struggle in India?

The classic case id how Indian spinners and Murali done hoem and away. Indian batsmen were so good against spin, so Warne's average against them home or away is utter crap. But Murali's case is different. His stats in India is ordinary, but he bossed Indian bastmen on Lankan pitches. Remember, both countries are very spin friendly. The same pattern with Harbhajan and Kumble. Very good in India against SL batsmen, but very ordinary on SL strips. once again, these are same set of batsmen playing. Any thoughts?

what I remember was Srilanka pitches spun from day 1. Indian pitches were flat or had something for fast bolwers on first few days and spun on day 4 or day 5. By day 4 or day 5 we were in good positions in most matches.

So that would make Indian spinners to have better stats in SL too. SG ball may be?

I think a part of the reason has got to do with umpires. I would like to see a stat of their averages in matches with a) one neutral and one home umpire b) two neutral umpires - before concluding anything definite. Home umpires may favour the home team for close decisions and on highly spin friendly wickets where every ball can become difficult to negotiate, this can make a significant differences to the averages.

I think only Kumble fits that bill. Which is why he did decently away as well. Bhajji and the new crop have struggled away. Always needed a dry pitch to have any impact. In fact in Mumbai, Swann and Panesar outbowled the likes of Bhajji/Ojha and Ashwin
