Vijay has cemented his spot the most in the batting lineup IMO. ( Not counting Pujara and Kohli, they are already cemented). People need to understand that in test cricket, one opener consistently scoring 20-25 runs while eating up 80 to 100 balls over 50% of the time is worth their weight in gold. Taking shine off the ball before the middle order is exposed is a huge, huge boost to the middle order, particularly Indian middle orders who are so very rarely troubled by quality spin. You cannot have a Sehwag-Dhawan type combo in tests as we'd be more often at 10/2 than 100/0 with them. Fast scoring, risk taking openers have their place in test cricket ( and some, including me, would say in the right circumstances be worth their weight in gold) but almost always besides a tuk-tuk opener who's aiming to see off the new ball. Current Aussie opening combo is showling this promise with Warner ( fast) & Rogers (tuk tuk). Past Aussie combos also had this, with Slater (fast) & Taylor ( tuk tuk), Hayden (Fast) & Langer ( tuk tuk, though langer was the fastest tuk-tuker i've seen). IMO, our most 'stable' combo was Sehwag-Chopra because Chopra ensured that Tendu almost always never saw the new ball. Vijay has been extremely impressive against the best pace attack in their home conditions, not least because he has an excellent leave and is not looking to force the pace.
