velu Posted January 3, 2014 Author Posted January 3, 2014 It is impractical on so many counts that either the organizers are blisfully ignorant of the problems or are deliberately creating media hype only to back out later. 1) The $6 billion budget is too low for the scale of operation they are planning. A trip to moon will cost more even today 2) The organizers claim that technology for the project exists today, but that is simply not true. A lot more engineering is required to overcome the challenges required for a 6-8 month trip. If this was scheduled in 2030, a lot more advances would happen by then, but the first flight is planned within 4 years. 3) The resources required to establish a fully self sufficient colony cannot be met by their plans. They have to have enough oxygen and enclosed space to grow enough plants which could then create enough oxygen for breathing and also produce food for consumption. It all sounds extremely impractical given how less we know about Mars till now. :agree: we need to have infrastructure in place before we go there for settling .. otherwise mars will turn out to be another bangalore :bulbul: :giggle:
