Smith v/s Sehwag..

Wasnt Sehwag in Ian Chappell's all time test team. Sehwag is an all time great. Smith was great but not close to Sehwag's class, so Sehwag anyday.

I'm going with Sehwag. Sehwag redefined the role of a Test opener and the reason you see likes of Warner as Test opener is thanks to Sehwag. If there hadn't been a Sehwag I doubt Aussie selectors would have backed Warner as a test opener. Averaging nearly 50 at a SR of around 80 with 2 triple hundreds and multiple double tons is astounding. At his peak there was no more dangerous player than Sehwag and Sehwag was the reason for plenty of India wins because of the extra time he allowed Indian bowlers to pick 20 wkts. Graeme Smith was a good player but Sehwag was the one who re-defined the role of a Test opener.

At a personal level. I don't really attach much importance to how someone looks while batting. The most important thing is to score runs and Smith has done it as much as Sehwag has. I am not trying to demean anyone's performance in the SC, but come to think of it, if there was a batsman whom I had to rely more then it would be Smith, especially when the going got tough. Smith's lowest average in any country is 36, I don't think Sehwag boasts that kinda record anyways. So, in a way, this comparison is not apples to oranges as is being pointed out. They have had similar careers and it all boils down to personal liking. Whom would you prefer, a maverick who could turn matches on it's heads or a strong leader kinda person who stand up for the cause of the team always.

What does this have anything to do with them as batsmen?

I'll pick Sehwag. Don't care about his struggles on bowler friendly tracks. Sehwag will remain the one of his kind, Warner has shown he can get close to him in last 12 months.

Sehwag. Smith has played some gritty innings but a better comparison will be with say someone like Saeed anwar or Attapattu

I was kind of disheartened when I got to hear that Smith is retiring and that Sehwag didn't qualify for T20 2014.
