BCCI pressured CA, ECB for ICC revamp: Sanjay Patel

The BCCI had threatened to form a parallel world cricket body before the England and Australia boards agreed to the controversial restructuring of the ICC and decided to give a lion's share of its revenue to the India board, according to the BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel. "We got criticised by many in the media and lot of them did not agree but we told them that if India is not getting its proper due and importance then India might be forced to form a second ICC of its own," Patel said at the Sports Journalists Federation of India's annual convention in Hyderabad. "England and Australia agreed and after that it was decided and from June 27th onwards the new structure will come into place. I would like to state that all 10 Full Members have signed the resolution." There was also no stopping BCCI president-in-exile N Srinivasan from taking over as the chairman of the ICC later this month in Melbourne as the Indian Supreme Court has not prevented him from doing so, Patel said. "By the month end, India will take a leading role in the ICC. Mr Srinivasan is going. There is no Supreme Court bar on him. Both of us are going to Melbourne. In the last four months we have settled (the issue) with all the Full Members of the ICC and convinced them about the new structure and the new financial model of the ICC which would be followed in the coming years. "India would play a leading role in the ICC and the reasons are well known. India is more or less responsible for 68 to 72 percent of the ICC's gross revenue but unfortunately so far we were getting three to four percent of it." Patel said that a private agency study had confirmed India's substantial contribution to the ICC. "Srinivasan asked a private agency to study the model and find out who is responsible for what amount and we found that India is responsible for 72 percent and ICC worked out that it was 68 percent. We had a meeting with the ICC officials in Dubai and we informed that 68 to 72 percent is not an issue but it was clear that the majority of the income is coming from India, so why should India take only three to four percent?"

It was obvious that BCCI pushed the new revenue system. They are still getting shortchanged though. But who was really behind the new power structure?

Apart from Aus(and with it goes NZ) and ECB, none of the other boards could survive in its current form without BCCI. I would talk more about how BCCI can influence other boards before like i did when this issue came up but now, a bigger IPL is all BCCI needs to make the other boards to shake in their boots.

I see nothing wrong with this. They could have done it behind close doors but PCB can never keep its mouth shut so it wouldn't have mattered anyway. The fact is, if the demand of Indian cricket earns 70% off the 400 million $ ICC makes from its world tournaments, then its only fair that the profits are shared likewise. It makes no sense to give teams like SL and Pak free money. That's the way the world works. The ICC model happens no where else. Besides this model has been present conveniently only when India became the top earner. It wasn't in place when England pulled in more money. We have also seen how well most of the cricketing bodies are run. Half of these bodies struggle to pay their players on time. Yet these same board gets an equal say in the happenings of the game. Does Zimbabwe have a VETO in UN? Another socialist model that's unique to ICC. Again, this is something that happened recently.

Im more then happy to see BCCI get its fair share......but I want to them to give back to the game through development of other countries, infrastructure etc. Otherwise cricket will stay exactly where it is right now 20 years into the future

We need other countries just as much as they need us. The revenue generation that is happening in India is not to watch Indian team but Indian team vs aussies/eng/etc. IPL is successful because of oversees players. One fine day BCCI is going to force all other cricket boards to join hand and dump India, bars its contracted players from playing in India (sure few will still play specially retired ones) but who will watch year long IPL as it is noone watches Ranji or any other domestic series.

BCCI is loaded with money, they can basically make money playing a 5 match ODI series with Liechtenstein. They don't need revenue from The world Cup that happens every 4 years,. (still not sure what happens with all that money considering India domestic set up is still crap compared to England and Australia.) long term it would be better for India if the ICC gets as much revenue as possible to grow the game. Every year for nearly 2 months (including 2 weeks before and after), ICC gets all the rights. The TV rights, sponsorship and gate receipts. ICC just doesnt have 1 tournament every 4 years. FIBA? Does lebron play in any fiba tournament? Need the money? What is that number? Why dont you just take enough for food and shelter and give the rest of your salary to charity? You dont need the extra money. Besides why does someone else get the rights to someone elses money? India has more number of cricketers than any other country. Even with indian players getting the same 25 % of BCCI's revenue every year, they still make less than what English and Aussie international players earn...simply because there are much more of them. Most cricket fans pay money to watch Indian cricket, so they earn the money. Others dont.

Fiba is the governing body of Olympic basketball. NBA allows its star players to play in that tournament without bullying fiba or the IOC into giving them money because they know in the long term it would benefit them financially. Again no one is against BCCI making as much money as possible. people are questioning the way its behaving. If Nadal federer and dokokovic demanded That Wimbledon organizers give them more money regardless of how the do in the tournament because of the money they bring in they would be attacked by everyone. And Wimbledon would loose its prestige if they caved into their demands.
