Congratulate Anil Kumble Thread

I also told him that he should seriously consider promoting himself in the batting order without feeling reticent about his own batting or the fact he is now skipper and shouldn't hesitate because of that. He is perfectly okay with it, and very confident of himself as a test allrounder. He did agree with me that in some circumstances it may give India the additional bowling option, and he said he wouldn't hesitate to go in with 3 spinners too , or an additional seamer.
ahead of Ganguly and VVS or ahead of SRT?? isnt tht allrounder title a bit too much ??? heck even Gillespie wasnt called as an allrounder .. and Gillespie is far much better bat than Kumble..

Not one comment or one bit of info re. his ability as a captain ?? A player doesn't 'earn' captaincy through long service or by taking many wickets - as AK has. Can someone please provide some details of his captaincy record.
Anil Kumble's record as a Test captain : 0 played, 0 won, 0 lost. I certainly feel that one major quality for getting a captain's job is being a top performer, and also being an experienced veteran, analytical cricketer, perfect team man, aggressive mentality and absolutely fair and a great sense of public dignity and a good communicator are all additional factors and Anil has ALL these things rolled into one. The main thing is he thinks it is an honor, like I had been saying 2 days back too when Sachin turned it down, and Anil thinks there is no question of any other decision except accepting the honor. Any horse that wants to win the race must must be willing to run the race eagerly. Period

Obviously "allrounder" here means a bowling allrounder , with Anil being able to contribute with the bat. With so many first class 50s, 100s, test 100 too, I am sure he can be considered as a capable bat lower down, apart as a specialist spinner. Particularly when we have Dravid, Ganguly , Sachin and VVS in middle order

That doesnt tell how good a captain he is.. Everybody will think its an honor.. and feeling honor doesnt automatically make u a good captain.. Sachin, dravid turned away the captaincy not cuz its not an honor for them.. its cuz of the politics and the pressures comes with it..

By the way ... Anil DID NOT call himself an allrounder. I used the word with him and he said he is very confident of his batting and contributing in the lower middle order... just to clarify

And fear of failure against Pakistan and in Aus, and also perhaps other considerations.... the facts are if any cricketer is asked to captain a team he is a member of, there can and should be only one answer..YES

I'm well aware of AK's qualities as a player. I asked about his captaincy record. To think of it as an honour is beside the point. That, in itself, doesn't make a good leader/captain. Nor does being a good player and/or team man, necessarily. Cases in point: Ian Botham, Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Andrew Flintoff, Alec Stewart, Allan Border's early days as skipper.

NewsI'm sure I'll get the support of all players: Kumble TNN / Joseph Hoover BANGALORE, November 9: Ten years after he was vice-captain to Sachin Tendulkar, leggie Anil Kumble has finally been promoted. The 37-year-old couldn't have asked for a better Diwali gift as he was named to lead India in the Test series against Pakistan (3), Australia (4) and South Africa (3). "It's definitely a great honour," said Kumble, who's the third-highest wicket-taker in the world (566 wickets). "I am happy that it's come at the fag end of my career. Now, it's given me additional motivation to carry on and perform. "I have a lot of people to thank for this. First of all, the people who have chosen me and believe I can do the job. Then my family, my wife Chetna for all the support and all the players. I'm sure I will get full support from all the players and it'll be reciprocal." Kumble fully realises that he's a stop-gap skipper. I guess it's come at a stage when the next guy takes over I have to make sure that there is a smooth transition." As one of the seniormost cricketers in the world, Kumble perhaps doesn't have many more years ahead of him. He had already announced his retirement from ODIs after the World Cup earlier this year. So, how long does he think he will continue playing? "Honestly, I don't know. I am not looking far ahead. Whatever job I have been given, I have to ensure I do it well. I would like to cultivate a team ethic. This is very important as we have some tough challenges ahead against Pakistan, Australia and South Africa." Kumble is keen that India do well against Pakistan in the forthcoming Test series. "We haven't won against them for some time at home. We have the confidence and potential to do that. Only the World Cup in West Indies was a blip. Otherwise, the team has been performing well." What's the single-most important thing he would like to do as captain? "To try and bring all the players together and specifically work with the younger lot. It's going to be challenging because we will barely have two days between the ODI and Test series. I will try and ensure that we form a team which achieves consistency like the Australians do, which we somehow have not been able to manage." Looking beyond the Pakistan series, Kumble said that he is looking forward to touring Down Under in December. "We came close to winning the series in 2003-2004 and it will be a great if we can beat the Aussies on their home turf."

Shastri ‘advises’, selectors lose nerve LOKENDRA PRATAP SAHI Nov. 8: Having been stumped first by Rahul Dravid and then Sachin Tendulkar, the senior national selectors themselves got into the act late this evening. Indeed, instead of promoting ODI and Twenty20 captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, as was widely expected, Dilip Vengsarkar and his colleagues appointed Anil Kumble as captain for the three-Test series against Pakistan. The 37-year-old Kumble, India’s most successful bowler (566 wickets in Tests and 337 in ODIs), had been tipped by The Telegraph as the dark horse. One understands former captain and cricket manager Ravi Shastri, who was present in Mohali during the second ODI, “interacted” with the selectors and “advised” them not to “expose” Dhoni in what’s bound to be a tough series. Just the other day, Shastri had publicly opposed Dhoni’s immediate promotion. It’s not clear in what capacity he spoke to the selectors, but he’s the National Cricket Academy chairman and very close to board president Sharad Pawar. Till 1am on Friday, Shastri hadn’t responded to a query (sent via an SMS) from this newspaper. Strangely, the selectors have only appointed the Test captain for the upcoming home series and not for the four matches in Australia too, as was on the cards. In other words, then, senior pro Kumble will be on trial. When Dhoni hasn’t got the job for the Tests at home, it’s highly unlikely that he’s going to be exposed (the selectors’ way of thinking) in Australia, which will be a much more demanding series. He should, of course, keep the ODI and Twenty20 captaincy. According to well-placed sources, Dhoni was the clear frontrunner when the selectors reached the PCA Stadium and an announcement was expected during the break. That didn’t come about. “The bottomline is that they (the selectors) started to dither on promoting Dhoni.… The issue of vice-captaincy, in case he got the job, also became a headache. The selectors just didn’t seem confident,” a source said. Unusually, Vengsarkar didn’t face the media. Worse, board joint-secretary Mohinder Pandove (who convened the meeting in the absence of secretary Niranjan Shah, who’d left early in the evening) simply announced two things: No change in the squad for the next two ODIs, in Kanpur and Gwalior, and that Kumble would captain in the Tests. Pandove walked off, declining to take any questions. Having different captains for different forms isn’t an ideal situation, but nobody is going to question Kumble’s credentials. He’s respected far and wide and is among the most passionate to have worn the India colours. Kumble is methodical and gentlemanly, and one can expect the Sreesanths to be quickly reined in. Also, one can look forward to more passion (as opposed to mindless aggression) on the field than seen during the Dravid era.
