Viv never had to carry the whole team on his shoulders alone. Had the luxury of playing for the best all round team. Since when did the 15 over field restrictions come into effect?
" In the early 1980s in an ODI between England and West Indies, the Windies needed 4 runs off the last ball and so England captain, Mike Brearley put all the fielders and the wicket-keeper on the fence to prevent a boundary from being scored. Fielding restrictions were then introduced in the Benson & Hedges Cup in Australia, and were adopted for all ODIs after the 1992 world cup. In 2005 these fielding restrictions have been changed in an attempt to make the game more interesting. "

Viv > Tendulkar in ODIs, its quite simple. 47 average(it was over 50 for the longest while, only came down below 50 in the closing stages of Viv's career), 90 strike rate in an era when 40 average and 65-70 strike rate was considered 'dashing'. Quite literally, jaw-dropping. Tendy gets 2nd best alltime in ODIs in my books.

Don't know about best ever ODI batsman, but as an opener he is unmatched. Not just for the longevity, but because the combination of an exceptional 44.27 batting average and a SR of 85+ is simply unheard of. Bear in mind that for most of his career, his SR was approx 88 and only recently has it fallen to 85. 5 other successful openers have an SR of 80+, but among them only Graeme Smith averages over 40 (and just barely). Out of those 5 openers, only Trescothick's SR of 85.22 matches Tendulkar's, but his average is a good 7 points lower. Among all openers, only two batsmen average higher than his 44.xx --> Hayden and Greenidge, but both haven't played even half the # of matches he has and even then, the differences in averages is negligible

Yep' date=' the amount of runs over such long period is another important issue as well.[/quote'] Kapil Dev had 434 wkts almost twice as much as Srinath (228). But was Kapil Dev a better bowler than Srinath, based on number of wickets alone? Longevity can't be the basis for comparison when we are talking about cricketers of two different era. Abilitywise Richards was devastating even without Powerplays. SRT is devastating as an opener when Powerplays came into effect. Tendulkar's stats before this match in 1994: http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/64463.html is: filtered 69 1758 84 30.84 0 13 21 4/34 48.33 0 18 0 IVAR's first 69 ODI matches: filtered 69 2769 153* 50.34 6 16 42 3/41 36.52 0 26 0 [but a lot of these matches were 55/60 overs too].

Never quite understand this crab mentality of Desis ... ghar ki murgi is always daal baraabar.
But i quite well understand the 'desis = best' chip-on-shoulder attitude of the likes of you. Viv is better, simply because he was FAR ahead of his era than Tendy is. So what Tendy and Viv are striking the same rate ? Viv played in an era where 'fast scoring proper batsmen' averaged 35-40+ and scored at 65-70 strike rate. Viv did 90+ in that era. he also did it in an era BEFORE the fielding restrictions became a law.Its much harder to score boundaries at will when the field is spread. Tendy is the best of his generation, no doubt about it and the best opener in history of ODI cricket. And as i said, he is clearly 2nd best of ALLTIME. That is hardly 'ghar ki murgi dal baraabar' and if you think that, i must question your knowledge of hindi idioms.
the same sheeet with Bradman ... plenty of embelishment thrown around bindaas to make them look bigger and better
You can stop lying now. Nobody said batting was harder in Bradman's times- i said that it was more or less equal, since batsmen now face better bowlers but on far easier pitches. How hard it is to bat is a factor of TWO conditions- pitch AND bowler. There are pitches where a club bowler would cut Tendulkar in half, there are pitches where alltime greats like kumble seem completely ineffective. Bradman was better the SAME comparative analysis amongst his peers that predator engaged in. Pity you don't see your double standards in that regard.
but the problem is it is reserved only for Foreign cricketers .
No, the problem is, you think Indian cricketers are the best in this world or anything to do with India is best. Ie, you have a case of patriotism gone madly out of control, not a problem with the rest here.
bloody rats ...
The only rats are those who propagate idiotic embellishments to potray 'my nation/people/culture are the bestest on this planet' like you do.

and I more than understand the self-loathing SKC types with crab mentality types like you and your minni mes .. what now ?
Now we either stop or you refrain from your namecallings, something that YOU started in this thread.
So ? Aandhon mei kaana Raja .... doesnt mean he was the best of ALL TIME... FYI Kapil had a better SR than Viv .... lets see if you can embelish Kapil the same way ... ooohh
kapil didnt have anywhere close to the average Viv did. There is a good 10 pts difference in strike rate and batsmen with similar average, between Viv and other greats of his era. There is a lesser gap between tendy and his contemporaries and he doesnt score runs at the tremendous rate Viv did comparative to his era.Viv stands out a bit more than Tendy did, thats all. For Tendy to have had similar impact as Viv, he'd have to maintain his batting average and have a career strike rate of 100 or more.
there are other ways to score runs than hit boundaries..... if you know anything about cricket that is .
And if you knew anything about cricket, you'd realize that bulk of the run comes in boundaries off the new ball.
And any cricket expert worth his salt will tell you that opening is much harder than batting at middle order
hardly any difference between opening and #3, where Viv played.
and no matter what proof is thrown at you .. you will keep wallowing true to your SKC and self loathing types ...
No, no proof, only OPINION. What you under-confident desi types fail to discern between is what is an opinion and what is proof. Which is why you, when cornered in a science debate, promptly declares that you hold 3-4 university level degrees in different field and followed cricket and this and that, etc etc.
And I gave you proof of how the 90s were the meanest for batting and the 30s were the best .... Lets see some proof and numbers instead of blanket proclamations ...
Your proof was found to be extremely inadequate and last i checked, you got schooled in statistical analysis by me and Swetabh, despite your proclamations of being a degree holder in statistics and engineering and a programmer par excellence.
I truly pity and detest your types that plainly lie thru their teeth or just bluntly disregard all proof that is thrown simply because they dont like their own leading the charts ... quite pathetic really.
There is no question of 'simply not liking their own leading the charts'- the FACT is, in some areas, despite its popularity, we have not had the players WORTH leading the charts. In other fields, where we genuinely lead the chart, i have repeatedly mentioned so. I've often mentioned Ashoka to be the best damn monarch in history of mankind before and he was desi too. I've mentioned Vikramaditya or Pulakesin to be among the very best, i've praised our soldiers as one of the best in history-even comparing them with the legendary spartans. But unlike you, i don't suffer from the chip-on-shoulder complex and the inferiority complex that makes you declare anything desi in positive light and embellish accounts. Which is why you are the idiot who argues kapil Dev= mcGrath kinda stuff. The ones who lie are the under-confident superiority complex ridden chip-on-shoulder types like you, who promptly declare ludicrous amounts of degrees in an online forum, just to try and win a debate for ego's sake. Which is why you are a hindu fundamentalist and i am not a fundamentalist of any sort.
Nope the only rats are those for whom no matter what anything Indian = 2nd best ... regardless of facts ... and you are unmatched in that regard.
that as i showed above, is a baseless charge from a categoric LIAR like you.

That tells me a thing or two about your cricketing knowledge
Actually, what tells us all we need to know about cricketing knowledge is your sillyness about singles against the new ball which i corrected. All the above shows, is that you spend your whole day in stats-guru, despite holding 4 degrees in 4 different fields apparently.
Now go repeat after me ... SRT Owns Viv
Sorry but your obvious fanaticism won't work here. Viv owns Sachin because Viv batted in an era of HARDER BOWLERS, HARDER BATTING SURFACE , NO HELMETS, NO FIELD RESTRICTIONS and HE DOMINATED HIS ERA BETTER THAN TENDULKAR DID. Plus he is ahead overall career average and strike rate. So, nomatter your jingoism, Viv > Tendulkar in ODIs.

lets hear your reasons why you gave that thread a miss after Doc's comments ...
Because the good medical practitioner, as awesome a dude as he is and as knowledgeable as he is, he is mistaken, so are you- as I and Swetabh very concisely proved to you. I give the doc the benifit of the doubt- since he wasn't involved in the debate from the start, i can see him missing a few explanations from me and swetabh and a few ungainly dodges from you, despite you apparently holding 4 degrees in 4 different field ( i wonder why you never acknowledge this ? too ashamed, perhaps ?) I am surprised that despite holding 4 university level degrees, you do not understand that doctors do not trump engineers when it comes to math. But wait- you yourself claimed to be an engineer, eh ? Pfffft.
And Proff also said that there are no errors in the Dataset ...
Prof agreed with me that error margin = necessary, just to show what the median deviation from your THEORY is. Prof also agreed with me that no error analysis = no value to the statistics presented. This much is common knowledge, but apparently not to supposed-statistics degree holder like yourself.
oye I was refering to Viv (and how one can score of singles and twos if boundaries are blocked) ... and last time I checked he never opened in a ODI ..
But, he came in plenty of times at #3 and #3 in ODIs is not that different from opening- the ball is still new, you still need to whack the ball around.
