Only TWO players reacted positively...Kapil Dev...and Bishen Bedi... both bowlers.. though Kapil's batting average was marginally better... as captain as well... In batting... Gavaskar and Vengsarkar had virtually identical averages as captains and as players... all others had major dips in batting average as captain... the worst is Rahul Dravid... 45 as Captain versus 60 as non-captain...a dip of 15 runs...per innings Ganguly went from 44 to 38...not too shabby...only 6 runs per innings... Time to reconsider roles?

Re: Captaincy's Effect On Indians... Dravid averages 57 with the bat since he became captain permanently. Those one off captaincy stints here & there dont count. Batsmen need to be judged over a period of time long enuff to take into account their peaks, loss of form, injuries and other variables. One off games, can make some players look like Bradman and others look ridiculous. I already did a thread on this before, on the old board. Here is a summary of how Indian captains fared: With Minnows excluded below are the averages Captain-------------Career Avg----------------As Captain Dravid-----------------57.33--------------------56.59 (since he became permanent captain) Ganguly---------------40.86--------------------34 (37.66 -- with minnows) SRT--------------------54.70--------------------51.35 Gavaskar--------------51.12--------------------50.72 Azhar------------------45.03--------------------43.93 (excluding minnow boosts his avg) Vengsarkar-----------42.13--------------------42.07 As you see, Ganguly is the only captain whose average dipped so much (15%). Even captains of other countries (Ponting, Inzi, Lara to name a few) enjoy a better average as captain

Re: Captaincy's Effect On Indians... Was going through Port Elizabeth stats and came across Kapil's fantastic 120 odd in 1992 in the 2nd innings in a losing cause versus Donald & co, when practically everybody else floundered. He wasn't captain then, but regardless, the guy didn't have a nerve ending in his entire body. Peerless.

One 45 as Captain is greater than 38 as captain infact its even greater than 44 overall. second ganguly is finally scoring in double digits so why make him captain so that he can return to single digits.
