Ok even if most parents want kids to study etc, you still have a massive population in India, more than UK, Australia, SA, combined.

It's not easy for quality talent to come out from the system and when they do, they don't have the proper coaching and support to grow.

Send your young coaches overseas to countries like Australia which has some great coaching schools etc, don;t know why India does not do this its so easy.

Send your young coaches overseas to countries like Australia which has some great coaching schools etc, don;t know why India does not do this its so easy. Its not that easy. Parents in India want their kids to do well in academics, get a degree and get a decent paying job. Survival is the priority. Sports is still not a career option for most. I may be wrong but half of the Indian population does not have an option to chose better schools and you are talking about choosing sports in school. Stop comparing India with your Australia.

AFAIK, India is a 60-year old country and Australia is a 100+ year old country. The population argument is a fallacy because per capita income plays a huge part. The massive pool is filtered out even before it enters. The time where it does - it changes. If you see, there's a difference in Indian sports post 2001.

Sports is an integral part of schools in India as well. The problem is that sports at the highest level lacks proper organization and structure, and that sports has limited support not just from the government but from the people as well. The facilities for most sports is crap (that even applies for cricket) and spectator interest is low. When I-League (the top football tournament in India) clubs play in front of about 2,000-3,000 fans in dilapidated stadiums, why would a young kid who's a big Manchester United or Barcelona fan be motivated to take up the sport professionally? And that's just football, which is still India's 2nd most popular sport. The state of other sports is much worse.

Ranji Trophy games are played in front of virtually empty stadiums and only a handful of domestic teams have sponsors, which is quite unlike the situation in England and Australia.

Why is this so? India only has one national sport, India aren't good at anything else, so why are they so crap at the one thing that 90% of the population love so much? What do you mean "if you take out the minnows"?. India is a minnow. They should stick to that girls game hockey.
