Sachin=GOD Posted December 17, 2014 Posted December 17, 2014 Obama announces moves to normalize U.S.-Cuba relations President Barack Obama said Wednesday that the United States will begin to normalize relations and establish diplomatic ties with Cuba, ending many restrictions that have been in place for five decades. Wednesday’s announcement came as Cuba released Alan Gross, a U.S. contractor who has been held in a Cuban prison for five years. The U.S. is moving to normalize relations with Cuba, including establishing diplomatic ties, a U.S. official said. The changes represent the most notable shift in U.S. policy in the Western Hemisphere since 1961. In a policy fact sheet issued Wednesday, the White House said it will end “unnecessary restrictions†on Cuba’s political, social and economic activities, a long-standing U.S. policy that officials concluded have had little effect, as the Castro family and the Communist Party have continued to govern Cuba. The new U.S. course will include the establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba, adjustments to financial regulations imposed on Cuban society, expansion of travel between the two countries and development of commercial sales and exports to Cuba from the U.S. The U.S. will also review Cuba’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism. As part of renewing diplomatic relations, the U.S. will re-establish an embassy in Havana and will work with Cuba on areas of mutual concern, including migration, counternarcotics, environmental protection and human trafficking, the White House said. http://www.wsj.com/articles/american-alan-gross-released-from-cuba-after-5-years-in-prison-1418825981
