sticky wicket Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/30-yrs-after-nod-iaf-gets-its-first-light-combat-aircraft-tejas/ Almost three decades after it was approved, the first Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas was handed over the the Indian Air Force (IAF) Saturday. The induction, if followed by timely delivery of further numbers, will be crucial in bridging the squadron strength of the IAF, which is down to 34 from sanctioned 42. The first series of LCA was handed over by Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar to IAF in Bangalore. According to a press release issued by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the production agency of LCA, Parrikar called for a need to think “out of the box” to meet the time-line challenges. “Thrust should be given on research and technology by exploiting the existing knowledge base which companies like HAL have,” he said. “Although one does not achieve everything overnight, by modifying our work culture and by adopting better technology and tools we can achieve better results,” he said. Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha said that LCA is the need of the hour, given the operational needs of IAF. “We are happy to receive the documents of the first series production of LCA,” he said. HAL Chairman R K Tyagi said, “We have achieved 60 per cent indigenisation in this LCA project so far. We will produce six aircraft next year (2015-16) and subsequently scale it up to eight and 16 aircraft per year.” The induction of LCA Tejas is crucial given that it will replace the ageing fleet of MiG-21. The LCA along with the planned induction of Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA) and Sukhoi are envisaged to bring the operational capabilities to stipulated strength. Anyone know how much each one cost?
G_B_ Posted January 18, 2015 Posted January 18, 2015 Depends on the units ordered cause economies of scale come into play....but about 30-40 mill per unit
Vilander Posted January 19, 2015 Posted January 19, 2015 lol what is nod ? after the 'nod' for 13 years there was no funding, then midway there was embargo for 10 years...f;n yellow journos. 2 units out of 16 are already in FOC config, in comparison jf-17( mig 21 based chinse fc-1) was not even weapons tested when it was raised into first squad in pak a year back, and mirage2000 wa snot weapons tested, su30 does not still have an EW. lol. Tejas is battle ready if IAF really wants to use it. http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/bengaluru/Tejas-lacks-the-teeth-IAF-needs/articleshow/45926119.cms
