Jaffer succeeded becos he played classy risk free cricket - in Aus risks needed! Bumper made a reference to this in the other thread - but this needs a good discussion. Jaffer played risk-free beautiful cricket scoring runs. However, Aus will not bowl to his strength around the middle and leg. They will bowl to the fielders, and force him to go into a shell. They will do that to all our batsmen - they will watch videos of Jaffer and others and will have super plans for them. We need someone who will take RISKS and break the shackles. Who can do this? Tendulkar is capable of this, but he needs to be willing to take the aggressive path and do it. Read Krish Srikkanth's reply in this ICF forum. He has said the ONLY way to beat Aussies is to take some risks and play agressively. Can Jaffer do that? Do we need Sehwag? Will Tendulkar step up? Dravid can anchor, and the rest need to hit at Aus bowlers in a calculated attack.

Great first we were going to be aggressive and now we should take more risks. Your are fit to be an Indian selector. We should play our natural game and in fact I would even say frustrate them. They will want to be aggressive and want to assert themselves. If we dont lose a wicket in the first hr or so that might throw their plan off. They are not a side that chokes runs and waits for wickets and in the process of buying wickets they will let us make runs.

we must play a waiting game....leave everything which is on the off side...and do not attempt any hook or pull shot... give their bowlers first 90 minutes...then start piling runs.. patience is something which will be needed a lot in australia... wasim has that...dravid..laxman....sachin.... KKD has application..we can accommodate sehwag in middle order....but sehwag is needed in australia tour.. at least he must be in the squad..

haha.. how stupid is this thread? jaffer succeeded because he played risk free cricket.. in aus risks are needed? says who.. you can score big even if you cut the risk free shots out... just need to look at Sachin's 241* against Aus last time around... he cut out all the shots he thought were risky.. made 241 runs without playing a single cover drive...

finey, aussies are not all tht u make em out to be.... they bowl loose balls too... especially bowlers like Lee and Tait are like a compass spinning in a magnetic field... they dont have any test class spinner now.... Hogg is a odi specialist and there is a sea of difference between getting through 10 overs in an odi and attacking and going for wickets in a test match.... if u r looking at SL series, Sangakara showed how mortal their bowling is.... the rest of the SL batting is crap anyways... refer to the 2-0 whopping we handed them last year... wat i would be worried is their batting.... it is the best in the world at the moment.... if our bowlers give em a tough fight, the series is pretty even in my opinion.... this is where Sreesonic will play a very critical role... he has the X-factor and they know it and they HATE him....

One thing i 've noticed about australia and their pitches is that any player who is really good with his pull shot and can keep it on ground with control , even if he LOOKS a little ugly playing that shot, is sure to make a significant impact. By "pull", i mean being able to PULL even deliveries from the off stump, of good length . If you observed many Australians do this Succesfully without worrying about being technically correct [ Gilchrist, Hayden, from the current squad, Players like Langer, Slater are other examples.] Australian pitches with their extra bounce gives the flexibility to play this shot. Something we should not miss. i cant think of any player in our team other than Yuvraj,Dravid and Laxman who are capable of doing this. Other players who have this limitation can score double centuries , but they are hardly going to to be able to manipulate the bowlers and make an impact on the match.

A batsman succeeds not because he played risk free cricket but he played just the right inning on a pitch like this. It is not just the opponent that will dictate the style of batting but the pitches and other variables. I think Jaffer's inning was picture perfect for this test match. He'll need to adjust to the conditions in Australia. That every batsman has to do not just Jaffer. I feel Jaffer will come off well in Australia considering he's very strong off the back foot and can play spin or fast equally well. The first test at Melbourne and the 3rd test at Perth will test his back foot skills. He'll need no adjustment in the second test at Sydney and the 4th at Adelaide.

Most batsmen Dravid, Tendulkar et al will use Lighter Bats for Aus series - commies were discussing this during ind pak series. Commies said Dravid has special ordered it, and will be handy for horizontal shots. Dont forget Dravid hooking Gillespie for a six to get to his 100 or 150? in style at Adelaide.
