What is our best ODI bowling attack for the world cup?

Assuming full fitness / availability of every bowler in the squad. I think, based on the Test & ODI matches so far, most of the pitches are going to be quite flat (perhaps with a bit of bounce). What do you guys think should be our best attack for this tournament? I would probably go with. 2 Pace Bowlers * Ishant Sharma * Umesh Yadav Justfication: I would lean towards these two because of the extra bounce they will get on the Aussie pitches. Ishant is the most accurate of our bowlers, and I think it's important for him to lead the attack well. Umesh I think is improving each game, and he gets that little bit of extra bounce over someone like Shami, who is a bit more skiddy. 2 Spinners * Ravi Ashwin * Ravindra Jadeja Justification: I think, even though Ashwin can be expensive, we need two spinners to control those middle overs. Ashwin, I feel will also get better as the tournament progresses. Jadeja, I think is a natural foil for Ashwin, providing control at the other end. 1 Medium pace swing-bowler / all-rounder: * Stuart Binny Justification I think Binny has done well with the opportunities provided to him. I would only pick one of him or Bhuvi. I would lean towards Binny though because he fills the role of the all-rounder slightly better than Bhuvi. I have left out Shami and Bhuvi from my best line up mainly because I don't see swing playing a huge role in this tournament. With the two new balls, reverse swing becomes less of a factor. Whatever early swing is there, I feel Binny and Yadav can utilise well enough. Thoughts?

I do not think we need 2 spinners Ashwin especially has been awful for some time now and he had 1 wicket in 5 matches in new zealand . Rest I will comment after next 2 matches as jadeja and ishant are fit now ..

I think it's really harsh to say he's been awful. He hasn't been at his best but he's had decent performances vs Sri Lanka in the ODI series in India and he did well in the ODI series vs England. He did have a bad series vs New Zealand but that was a year ago and since then he's done reasonably well. Not to mention, he's the only bowler in the squad with world cup experience.

I should have said outside india Also bad series in Australia,New Zealand and South africa Does well in England because of drier tracks in limited over cricket but he has averaged over 100 in New Zealand and South Africa and same form continuing here. In away odi games our problem is 20 easy overs of spinners where we do not pick wickets . With jaddu you get odd wicket and decent death bowling so I will pick him .

Yep I agree with picking Jadeja, but I don't necessarily agree that Ashwin is not useful in Australia. He hasn't done that well in the past but I think that on flat tracks sometimes the spinners become quite useful. I don't think India can afford to pick 4 pace bowlers unless it's an absolute green-top (which I don't see happening in Australia). I don't think India have 4 quality pace bowlers and as a result if you pick 4 you're going to get 1 per match who gets absolutely demolished at 7+ per over. Similarly, I don't see any point in picking Jadeja and Patel in the same side, since they are almost identical bowlers. I think we need as much variety in our attack and 20 overs in the middle with spin I think is important to control those middle overs. I don't see any of our pace bowlers being able to do that.

I agree ..most of our pacers do not even know how to bowl in middle overs so it's big problem .. Let's wait and see these last 2 matches and hope ashwin finds way to be effective ..

Fair enough. Just some food for thought. You mentioned Ashwin's poor average in New Zealand, but Jadeja's is not much better in Australia (I'm going to deliberately ignore South Africa, given that it's irrelevant for this world cup) Ravindra Jadeja: * in Australia: 3 wickets @ 109 (Econ: 5.3) * in NZ: 4 wickets @ 60 (Econ: 5.23) Ravi Ashwin: * in Australia: 8 wickets @ 44.75 (Econ: 4.97) * in NZ: 1 wicket @ 227 (Econ: 5.15) To be honest, New Zealand is probably somewhere where Bhuvi and Shami come back into the equation because of the extra swing and shorter boundaries, so I wouldn't pick 2 spinners there.

both shami and bhuvi got 0 swing in new zealand.

Jadeja improved as bowler after last Australian tour . To be honest we cannot afford 2 defensive spinners but that is what we got and between them jadeja just offers little bit more specially in power play . Also jadeja looked ok in New Zealand but ashwin I felt like batsman can play with eyes closed so stats even though show it but it's not full thing

Also in New Zealand bhuvi did nothing at start and we only had 1 wicket taker and he was shami .. We did reduce them to 40 for 3 many times but middle overs we just did not had enough threat ..

Our first six batsmen are permanent. Jadeja is also fixed as he is the best with the bat among all bowlers. So I'll only be concerned for the remaining 4 places. My choice will be Binny, Ishant, Umesh, Shami or Binny, Ishant, Umesh, Ashwin/Axar I'll go with Binny as he is slightly quicker than BK, quite consistent with his areas and a much better batsmen than BK Umesh as I consider him as the strike bowler in our existing squad Ishant for his consistency of late and decent pace+bounce Shami or Ashwin/Axar depending upon form/conditions Will prefer Ashwn as Axar seems to be in terrible form with the bat. But if Axar finds form, then can be considered as he is a better bowler in tight situations.

I don't understand the logic of saying we can't afford 2 defensive spinners when our pacemen are likely to leak runs at 7+ per over in the power play overs. Generally, we have NEEDED defensive spinners because the situation of the game has called for it. Of course attacking spinners would be great, but I would take 2 defensive spinners over 4 wayward quicks any day of the week.

No we have to keep them playing because we have got them but if you watch any game in last few years you will know we have lost matches in middle overs where we fail to pick wickets . At start shami and bhuvi has done ok job and got opposition down to 3 wickets in 10 overs many times . Truth is even our death bowling looks bad because of us being useless in middle as we let other team have wickets in hand and they attack us at end ..yesterday even South Africa got smocked at end so no team is good at death if wickets are there most teams are good at death because they pick wickets through out and some times you get great spells by like of malinga but it's rare . I agreed with you that we need to play these 2 spinners as we are forced too but it's not ideal situation and I want atleast one spinner to be wicket threat in middle .

Agree I would go with - Binny Jadeja Umesh Shami Ishant

Binny will be canned for 80 runs in his 10 overs if he opens the bowling in WC.Then people will cry for Bhuvi instead of Binny. Result will be somewhat similar, 10 overs 55 runs and no wicket. The fact is we dont have opening bowlers who can pick early wickets. The last match was a plot by Aus to make Binny a permanent fixture in WC to mess up team India.

If both are expected to go wicketless, Binny is preferable as he can reinforce the batting by adding 20 more runs than BK. This will also have a psychological effect as the middle order batsmen can be less circumspect. Also, his inclusion will allow the team to accommodate a wicket taking bowler.

My pick Binny Jaddu Bhuvi Ishant Shami Open with Binny and Bhuvi when the new ball is swinging. Ishant first change bowler throught the middle overs with Jaddu. Then Shami with the old ball. Later in the tournament, Ashwin can be included in place of Binny if pitches are favoring spinners. Axar and Jaddu can't be in the same team. As a bowler they are almost similar and Jaddu is much better batsman. Wish we had one more batsman like Murli in Axar's place.
