Bihar Chief Minister Jitam Ram Manjhi has courted yet another controversy on Thursday by saying that he has been accepting 'commission' from engineers involved in government construction projects.
He said that engineers overestimate the cost of a project and give him commission but promised that he wont take any commission from now on and use that money for the teachers of the state.
More money is spent on the construction of pillars than the bridge...these engineers and technocrats who have stacked crores of rupees give some money to contractors and to me too...I also get commission...I will not take the commission money from now on and use that money to teachers of the state.....," said Manjhi.

In pursuance to the practice of ministers declaring their assets, Manjhi, in December 2013, declared himself "69 years old with 5 acres of cultivable land at his village Mahkar in Gaya district besides a house on a plot of 2,500 sqft". In his affidavit filed with the nomination papers for the Gaya Lok Sabha seat in May 2014, Manjhi declared he was "68 years of age with no agricultural land but a house at Mahkar built on a piece of 4,000 sqft. But, he changed the details again in his declaration made in December 2014, mentioning his age as 70 with "5 acres of cultivable land and a house on 2500 sq ft plot at his village".
