He said that engineers overestimate the cost of a project and give him commission but promised that he wont take any commission from now on and use that money for the teachers of the state. In his affidavit filed with the nomination papers for the Gaya Lok Sabha seat in May 2014, Manjhi declared he was "68 years of age with no agricultural land but a house at Mahkar built on a piece of 4,000 sqft.
