that comparision says 2dBi each for Netgear & 5dBi for TP-Link.. it should help to have higher power for extended reach. A modem + router combo is a package of chipset/configuration software(like NAT,Firewall)/components on the PCB.. so one has to look at all those before going ahead to buy. I have never used Asus modem,but Zyxel should be good

:--D 1. About higher antenna gain: there are two antennas in netgear & they give the max gain per antenna whereas TP-link mentions the overall gain which can be distributed in any ratio. 2. What do you want in a modem: reliability/ greater reach / configurability/excellent firewall/parental control.. the first two parameters generally are decided by the chipset used and the rest depends on the software used. Netgear uses broadcom chipset I think..I am not sure about TP-link ps: TP-link uses Trendchip(chinese processor) ..

What did you do with your old router? Old routers can be configured as repeaters. My friend did this - used 2 of his old routers as boosters/repeaters - most recent models can be used for the purpose. You need to connect the ethernet cable to your older router and power it on. Then in the wireless settings ( differs by model ), change it from 'Access point' to 'repeater' option. For some models you need to create a wireless bridge. From what I know, repeater is not very different from a normal router anyway.

The above link you gave is for a TPLink range extender and it seems to have issues connectng to android or other mobiles. I dont really need a dual band repeater as the repeater will mainly service one room only.

You can try the modem configuration user interface.. something may be there. I would still say move your modem-router to another part of your house if possible & check if you can get signal in all corners of the house. You can use the android apps like wifii-analyzer to check for signal level
The above link you gave is for a TPLink range extender and it seems to have issues connectng to android or other mobiles. I dont really need a dual band repeater as the repeater will mainly service one room only.
I just gave an example of powerline adapter.. you can check for other products.
