Australia to shelve annual cricket Tri Series SYDNEY, Australia (AP): Australia will shelve its annual international cricket Tri Series from next season, suspending a competition which has been a fixture of Australian summers for almost 30 years. Cricket Australia said Monday it will forego the annual limited overs tournament from the 2008-09 season in favor of head-to-head clashes with traditional rivals. The Tri Series has been a massive drawcard for Australian cricket fans since 1979-80. Australia will play both South Africa and New Zealand in three tests, five one day matches and possibly one Twenty20 international next year in a new format which rules out the triangular tournament. This year's Tri Series involving Australia, India and Sri Lanka will be the last of its kind, Cricket Australia said. http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/holnus/007200712031411.htm

It's quite understandable there would be changes made - given the length of tours by visiting teams. This summer, India arrives on Dec. 18 and plays it's last match on March 7 and Sri Lanka has to come back after playing 2 warm up matches and 2 Tests in November. The other factor was the sometimes poor attendances at the matches not involving Australia. Next summer's scheduled 10 ODI's - against the Proteas and the Black Caps - all involve the home team.
