Any Urdu poetry lovers here? No. this is not for the verbose poetry but 1-2 liners. Some of my favorites below ( I am posting in Roman script instead of Urdu as I dont think many ICFers understand Urdu script ) Ghalib : Na tha kuch to Khuda tha, kuch na hota to Khuda hota/Duboya mujh ko hone ne, na hota main to kya hota? Altaf Hussain ( Mohajir in Pakistan - leader of MQM ). Mohajir means a muslim who is exiled ( hijra in urdu/arabic means exile) and is term used for Indians who migrated to Pakistan, mainly Karachi ( and are Urdu speakers ) : Na Khuda hi mila, na visaal-e-sanam/Na udhar kay rahay, na idhar kay rahe Ghalib : Hazaaron khwahishen aisi, kay har khwahish pe dam niklay/Bohat niklay meray armaan. Lekin phir bhi kam niklay Ghalib : Yeh masail-e-tasawwuf, yeh tera bayaan Ghalib/Hum tujhay wali samajhte, jo na badakhwar hota :hatsoff: Majrooh Sultanpuri : Main akayla hi chala tha janib-e-manzil magar/Log saath aatay gayay aur kaarvaan banta gaya Post your favorite Urdu shers here :two_thumbs_up: If anybody needs English translations, kindly ask. :icflove:

Nice thread. Also nice to see it coming from you. I don't know where these two come from, but are pretty popular: Yeh Ishq nahin aasan, bas itna samahj lijeye, Aag ka darya hai, aur doob ke jana hai ========== Hamein to apno ne loota, ghairo mein kahan dam tha, meri kashti wahan aa dubi, jahan pani kam tha ===== I might have made some errors here and there btw...

He composed Taranah-i-Hindi ( Saare jaahaan se accha Hindustan hamaraa ) which is sung a lot in India. Iqbal later disowned it though ( you are sure aware of the reasons) What would your opinion be if he had earlier written this in Taranah--hindi promotong communal harmony Mazhab nahiin sikhata apas meṉ bair rakhna Hindī hain ham, wat̤an hai Hindustan hamara And then changed it to ( in Tarana-i-Milli ) Cīn o-ʿArab hamara, Hindustun hamara Muslim hain ham, wat̤an hai sara jahan hamara -------------------- As you can see, the main song for which he was famous in India and the ideology that current India stands for - had been disowned by Iqbal. Hence he is not famous and younger generation ( though I am not old myself :) may not even have heard of him )

Btw Im surprised to know "Na Khuda hi mila' date=' na visaal-e-sanam" is from Altaf hussain; the politician... are you sure? May be its form Altaf Hussain Hali?[/quote'] Altaf Hussain the politician is the famous guy who used it - I am sure about it. I assume he composed it as every context it is heard, his name comes up. Possible that some unknown poet composed it but it is popular due to Altaf Hussain of MQM

Probably its rumored Only in india that Iqbal "disowned" tarana-e-hindi, never happened... What happened is: Tarana-e-milli after Tarana-e-hindi just represent two different and opposite approaches of Iqbal in 2 different phases of his life... In earlier stages he was nationalist and wrote it patriotically, he at that time thought national-identity is more important and should be above everything else but in later phases he developed totally different views, his poetry there reflects religious views in deep, he became totally mystic and then on pattern of "tarana-e-hindi", he then wrote "tarana-e-milli" which suggests Muslims no matter where they live are part of same identity, everything is beyond nationalism, infact he then wrote strictly against nationalism...

Well..as I mentioned, we Indians (current generation) dont care about Iqbal much. He did disown Taraana-i-Hind and many of your Pakistani experts also agree ( google it). His poetry is still remembered in parts but once his ideology changed ( as you mentioned yourself ) - we Indians could not identify with him. It is completely different from what India stands for now - a nation for all religions. His ideology ( to put it very simply ) : Religion has no nation India's ideology : Nations ( state ) has nothing to do with religion i.e Church and State are separate.
