I just bumped it....maybe we can merge this one ( or wait...atheism as a philosophy of belief deserves its own space, and atheists have to say whether these 2 threads are separate). Answers Varun are available with me :-) and as well as in a certain work called the Bhagavad Gita :two_thumbs_up:

The other thread asks for questions from all people (ones who have religious answers, others who have scientific answers, and most who don't have any answers.. ). That thread is different from this but it's a bit related hence referred it to you.. As far as this thread is concerned, I frankly don't care if I'm an atheist or agnostic or what have you. All I know is i'm too insignificant in the grand scheme of things to be bothered over it. Just curious though, what would such a thought process characterize me as ? Nihilist ?

Thats what I said too. Man has got a natural affinity for some kind of spirituality, based on man's natural tendencies to be happy, be good etc. And the pre-conditions of the creation of Universe itself have never been understood/explained by the most advanced science. I had said that even atheists who don't believe in a "religious god" like Shiva, Jesus, Allah etc..cannot deny the above 2 points, and this being a belief itself, is accepted in Hindu thought as a very valid philosophy. Note : The ancient Vedas don't mention God, but just Truths on creation, philosophy, the nature of the changing universe, the unchanging etc, the importance of values and so on
This is an interesting but contentious point. I'll have to search around to find it, but I'm pretty sure there was a study done where stimulating various parts of the brain induced religious or spiritual experiences in subjects. So perhaps there is some truth in your assertion but from a neurological perspective rather than a metaphysical one. Further to this how does psychedelic drugs come into this? Most 'pagan' belief systems used mind-expanding substances and even in the Vedas a mysterious substance, soma is mentioned repeatedly. Again, Timothy Leary conducted a blind study with psychedelic mushrooms and found that a large percentage of those given the mushroom reported spiritual experiences. Anyway my point is, what causes spiritual experience and is it innate or can it be induced in controlled circumstances and therefore explainable in scientific terms?

Man's ignorance at any point in history is called God by him. What you don't understand attribute it to some unknown and supreme power. QED.
Aye.. hence our "indra dev", "agni dev", " dev" :P

On that note, I would rather have a few drinks, be honest about it, and expose a pedophile fraud, than be a teetotaler and promote a fraud/corrupt man. Thats why I left.

Now' date=' can you say the say things about the Prophet? Even he is believed to have married his seven year old niece.[/quote'] Anyone who marries a 7 year old ( if it can be proven ) for the sake of his own pleasure/physical etc...in today's context is certainly a pedophile if he had coerced the child into sex. On the same note, even till last century/early this century, girls were routinely married off by the age of 14/15 etc..and became mothers by the time they were 16 or even earlier. I would not call these instances pedophilia due toa belief system existing , social structure etc in these times. But if a so called spiritual guru like Sai Baba asks 6th grade or 8th grade boys in his school to indulge in sex with him, and says it is for "spiritual reasons"...I do have a problem with it. That is deliberately cheating the boys just for his personal physical perversities, and this is a clearcut case of pedophilia ( like the catholic church for example..when such cases were exposed)
