Sri Lanka and Bangladesh a comparision

So, I remember the winters of 1996. It was the first WC that was advertised and hyped up so successfully after all it was happening in India and they had a good chance to capture it. But then something unforeseen unfolded. The sheer brute force with which Sanath hit the square cuts of lime light everything else faded in the background. After all we often forget that Sachin was the highest run-getter of that WC too. In 1996, you could see the rise of Sri Lanka, you could see the force of Sanath, the talent of Aravinda and the guile and sharpness of Chaminda and Murali. You could almost see a team that had become unstoppable under a leader who inspired them. Yes, it hit you hard as an Indian fan especially the semi final but anybody who saw the group match vs Sri Lanka and how Sri Lanka demolished England it wasn't bewildering anymore. You knew that India had to play exceptionally well to win and they did not. But that is for another day. This is the difference and this is slightly frustrating. Bangladesh has definitely improved, the fielding is so much better, their bowlers are bowling with a plan and purpose and their batsmen seem confident especially in home conditions. But truth be told they in no way look like the Sri Lanka of 96, they look a much somber version of them if anything. They do not look unconquerable. Their batsmen do not look world beaters or bowlers unplayable. Even during Pakistan series and now some how the lack of preparedness of the opposition is much more glaring than Bangladesh's play. Having said that Bangladesh surely did out play India in all departments but one cannot help but feel India underplayed. Time will tell if this is Bangladesh's Sri Lanka moment but for now the faults are surely in India's stars, rockstars. (pun not intended)

1996 Srilankan team were deserving world champions.... We improved but we are definitely not even close to being world champions... That being said, in 4 years time, we might become close to top ranked team. Next WC might be an interesting one for BD

I'll wait till champions trophy. Let's see how competitive they perform against different teams (like a mini WC). We will know right there and then if they will be able to keep up with their current form. But regardless, it seems like we may finally have G9 instead of G8. Could have been G10 by now if Zim was not struck down by political craps

Sri Lankans had champs like sanath, desilva and murali. whenever one of them was doing well, the others regrouped around them. Bangladesh have sakib who is the best ODI allrounder now. more than champions, they have hunger to win and great synergy.

main reason why Bangladesh won over pak and india is that they are no longer awestruck by these two teams. they genuinely dont think that India or pak are better than them. They feel Bangladesh is the more talented team. They are not scared anymore.

We'll see how Bangladesh does against non subcontinent teams. Only then can we compare Bang to SL. Beating these mediocre India and Pak teams is still impressive. But win a game or two against Aus/SA, and then you'll really have the attention of the cricket world.
