Apart from Sachin, the others (Greenidge, Ganguly, Anwar, Jayasuriya, Hayden, Gilchrist, Waugh, Kirsten and Haynes) are better ODI openers than Dilshan (some argument can be made for him over someone like Jayasuriya but that's about it). So you think Gilchrist isn't a better opener than Dilshan?

It's because openers play more pace than spin. Simple logic. Having said that Dilshan is no slouch in playing spin too. Gives advantage over Haynes and Greenidge.

Ganguly over Jayasuriya is a hilarious comparison. :hysterical:. After Sachin, it's some one like Jayasuriya or Gilly take the openers slot due to their superb second and third disciplines and quick scoring. Ganguly has neither qualities, and woefully slow compared to openers of his day (SR in mid 70s?). So was the case with Hayden. Dilshan on other hand has a superb average, and scores quick too. He has second, third and fourth disciplines to add in to a team (ATG fielder, servicable offspinner, and reserve keeper). None of the openers other than Jayasuriya and Gilly has above qualities, not even Sachin. Because of this he is a valuable player top open the innings.
