Even comparing the first 112 tests of Ponting and sachin ( Ponting has played 112 tests to date)...here are the stats Sachin : 112 9459 241* 58.38 33(100s) 37 (fifties) 33 3/10 46.06 0 72 0 Ponting : 112 9508 257 59.42 33(100s) 38(fifties) 5 1/0 46.20 0 127 0 So...just give it a rest...Ponting is by FAR a better batter in tests too
The stats are a wash and Ponting is a FAR better batsman than Sachin wow what color glasses are you wearing Hari ?

The only thing SRT has going for him when compared to Ponting is that he played on tougher pitches and tougher attacks. But the game has become batsman friendly for a while now(post-2000). Even pre-injury this decade Tendulkar wasn't dominating the bowling, piling up the scores and winning matches for his team like Ponting has been the past 5 years.

Just compare Ricky and Sachin, in tests in ODIs, at home, away... in any country... whichever way....Ricky scores over sachin ALL ways and formats. Arguments closed

How ??... if we ignore Ind vs Aus games for a moment ( even here Ponting outscores Sachin)... against all other attacks in all other countries too, Ponting has FAR outscored Sachin in ODIs...ex. SA, NZ, Eng, Pak , SL etc . In India Ponting is almost equal Sachin, and in Aus Ponting far outscores Sachin... so what is this about "tougher pitches and tougher attacks" ??

We have to keep Two things in mind when comparing Ponting and Tendulkar: 1) Ponting is backed by 10 other players whenever he goes to bat 2) Tendulkar is backed by billions of people's prayers whenever he goes to bat

What was Ponting's record against Walsh, Ambrose, Donald and Pollock at the top of their game? It's like saying if by the time Ponting visits the next time and Kumble has retired and he manages to smash a couple of double centuries against Murali Kartik, he will all of a sudden become a superb player of quality spin in India when we all know he can't even a buy a run against Kumble/Harbhajan in Indian conditions.

When Donald, Polly, Walsh, Amby, Akram, Waqar, Akhtar et al were at their peak, i still dont see how Ponting is significantly poor to be called a "Pretender". If anything the stats suggest that Tendulkar at the peak of his abilities was more or less equal to Ponting in the 90s against the best attacks of their times.

I would advise you to stay clear of head to head stats vis a vis Tendulkar and Ponting. All I need to do is say, "Ponting in India" as far as Tests are concerned to kill all arguments.
Is Gary Sobers, who averages 58 overall & 15 in NZ a pretender ? Barring that one statistic Ponting's numbers are superior to every modern batsman in almost every category. Ponting used to be a pi$$ poor player of spin several years ago. But his recent average of 50+ in Murali's den suggests that he has improved LEAPS & BOUNDS even on that aspect. I am sure the way he is batting, in a couple of more series, Ponting will repair his record in India.

The statistics are of no use ' date='simply because Sachin uses wooden bat ,where as Ponting cheats by using Graphite reinforesed bat. ICC sits and watch and applaud.I think they should allow the Aussies to use Aluminium or Titanium bats.[/quote'] Another crock. Ponting uses a wooden bat, much like SRT's except not as heavy. He doesn't need the extra weight because he has exquisite timing.

@Donny... If by using heavy bats every one can garner great timing' date='why aren't many cricketers using such bats?[/quote'] They are. By the way, Dan, a bigger bat doesn't enhance timing. Like another piece of male anatomy, it's not how big it is that counts. It's how you use it. Maybe you know, maybe not, Don Bradman used a 2lb. 2 oz. bat - about 14 ounces lighter than Sachin's MRF.
