Eden Wicket faces flak and WAsim Jaffer the enquiry Bengal and Mumbai played out an inconsequential final day of their Ranji Trophy match at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. More... Wicket faces flak - Ranji trophy Gurav, Jaffer hit centuries on final day at the Eden A STAFF REPORTER Calcutta: Bengal and Mumbai played out an inconsequential final day of their Ranji Trophy match at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. Though the match ended in a draw, the debate veered more on the unresponsive Eden wicket that received sharp criticism from both sides. It was surprising to see Mumbai skipper Wasim Jaffer decide to bat again after they wrapped up Bengal for 296 Friday evening. A first innings lead of 325 runs was enough to enforce the follow-on and push for an outright victory. But the defending champions’ decision to go for a draw instead, seemed baffling, if not entirely shocking. Mumbai have done it in the past (not enforcing the follow-on), but always in the knock-out stages when the fitness of the team is a primary concern. But a decision like this at the start of the league was bound to raise questions. But Jaffer, who slammed his 42nd first-class hundred in the second innings, said: “I asked all the players and discussed with the coach that the wicket was too slow. And all the bowlers had bowled about 20 to 25 overs. We’ve seen what kind of wicket it is. Even if we had tried, it would have been a tricky decision. “We had put in a lot of effort and getting them out would have been difficult. I won’t say it was never going to happen, but we all thought that we gave our best in the first innings. There was hardly any help for bowlers in the wicket. We were lucky we won the toss.” Jaffer urged the BCCI to ensure that domestic cricket is played on competitive wickets. “It’s something for the BCCI to look into. If there is some life or help in the pitches then it’s going to produce good cricket. There are lots of games when teams have taken first innings lead, but don’t go for outright win. That’s, because, there’s hardly any gap between the games and they want to keep their bowlers fresh. They don’t want an injury, which might hamper the important games,” he said. Realistically, even if Jaffer sent Bengal in once again, he didn’t have the resources to take 10 wickets. Abhishek Nayar suffered a niggle in his ankle, and, though he bowled 13 overs on the third day, it was later learnt that he had pulled his hamstring. Matters got worse when Aavishkar Salvi also complained of a shoulder sprain that left only Dhawal Kulkarni and Ajit Agarkar to form the pace battery on an unresponsive Eden wicket. Ajinkya Rahane, who scored a magnificient 110 on the first day, was substituted by Praful Waghela due to an ankle injury. “I think Abhishek Nayar will miss the next game. But Ajinkya Rahane and Salvi would be available against Railways,” Jaffer said. And the Mumbai skipper was not the only one who blasted the Eden wicket. Bengal coach Woorkeri Raman, too, flayed the strip in no uncertain terms. “It was a bloody tough job for the bowlers on this wicket,” Raman said. But that doesn’t absolve his side from the mistakes they made. Both Jaffer (104 not out) and opener Omkar Gurav (127 not out) slammed their respective hundreds, the latter being assisted by Bengal’s butterfingers on the way. Mumbai were 286 for 1 in their second innings on the fourth day when the two skippers decided to shake hands. After Bengal, Jaffer to face MCA queries The Mumbai team’s decision to not enforce follow-on against Bengal in the Ranji Trophy Group A match at the Eden Gardens hasn’t gone down well with the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) as they have asked for an explanation from the team management. Mumbai (621) had a 325-run first innings lead after they bowled out Bengal for 296 on Friday but didn’t ask the hosts to bat again. “It’s difficult for me to comment on the issue. After the team’s return, we will go through the manager’s report and will take a call. We will also have a talk with the team management,” MCA joint-secretary Lalchand Rajput told The Sunday Express from Mumbai. Skipper Wasim Jaffer, however, defended the team’s decision to not enforce follow-on. “It was a team decision. The bowlers were very tired and there was nothing in the wicket. Victory with a bonus point would have given us six points, but there was no guarantee that it would happen. So we decided not to go for an outright win,” Jaffer said. Bengal were happy to be gifted a point which they didn’t deserve. “I can’t comment on their decision. But even if they did enforce follow-on, I’m sure our lads could have saved the game. Our players have the ability to bat a lot better than what they did in the first innings,” Bengal coach WV Raman said.

Parmar called again, referred to BCCI Mohnish Parmar was once again called for chucking, this time in the Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra in Surat. More... Parmar called again, referred to BCCI 16 November 2010 Mohnish Parmar was once again called for chucking, this time in the Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra in Surat. The 23-year-old Gujarat off-spinner, named in the 'suspect action list' last season, was called in the second innings of the match by umpire SS Shamsuddin and K Hariharan. Match referee Hemant Angle has asked the BCCI to take necessary action. The umpires were convinced of Parmar's throwing after referring to video evidence during tea break on Day Two. Hariharan later called Parmar after tea and even warned captain Parthiv Patel. Parmar didn't turn-up to bowl on Day Three.

Delhi has its task cut out against Gujarat Despite a flurry of changes in the side after a good outing against Tamil Nadu in Chennai, Delhi will fancy their chances against a determined Gujarat in Ranji Trophy tie beginning Wednesday at Ferozeshah Kotla. More... Delhi has its task cut out Special Correspondent NEW DELHI: Delhi has a few issues to tackle. The inspired opposition, inclement weather and an uncertain pitch look a lethal combination and confront the home team with factors beyond their control on the eve of the Ranji Trophy superleague match against Gujarat here. The pitch at the Ferozeshah Kotla had a tinge of green but not the kind that would motivate a fast bowler. Delhi skipper Mithun Manhas summed it up wisely when he said, “We got to utilize the pitch as we get. Gujarat has a good attack and I am expecting a good contest but we are happy with the overall form of the team. It is a crucial game and we need an outright win.” Delhi has four points from two matches but Gujarat comes on the strength of a victory against Saurashtra and three points against Railways. Skipper Parthiv Patel observed, “We have started the season well and are playing better as a team. Our strength is our seam attack. It looks a typical Kotla pitch and the grass is not likely to make much difference.” The teams have their task cut out. Delhi can't afford to take Gujarat lightly since the latter has an incisive seam trio in Siddharth Trivedi, Ashraf Makda and Ishwar Choudhary, who played a major role in the win against Saurashtra. Of course, leg-spinner Salil Yadav too has bowled with purpose but Gujarat draws its strength from the seam attack. Delhi enjoys a good seam pair in Pawan Suyal and Sumit Narwal even as it toys with the idea of including Pradeep Sangwan or rookie Kapil Yadav. Left-arm spinner Vikas Mishra will find himself saddled with lot of work as Delhi looks to rest off-spinner Manoj Chauhan. “We have batted well,” remarked Manhas quite rightly. He has looked solid and Virat Kohli has made huge progress as a batsman to rely upon with back-to-back centuries against Bengal and Tamil Nadu. The encouraging form of Shikhar Dhawan would also motivate the home team. Strokeplayer Unmukt Chand, set to make his debut, is considered “ready” for the big stage. Curator Venkat Sundaram promised a “decent” pitch under the given circumstances even as he looked at the sky with apprehension. “Weather is not in my control,” he shrugged his shoulders. A small shower this afternoon proved a dampener for the home team which left the venue praying for bright sun over the next four days. All eyes on Kohli At the adjoining nets, Delhi's Virat Kohli was middling the ball. Kohli seemingly opened his eyes wider than usual in an attempt to spot the ball better. Light or the lack of it will come into play in the Elite Group A match between Delhi and Gujarat starting at the Ferozeshah Kotla starting on Wednesday. After scoring back-to-back centuries in the first two matches, Kohli will be keen to notch up a third. It will be interesting to see how this wicket behaves as it has been prepared keeping in mind that the International Cricket Council's pitch consultant Andy Atkinson will be at the Kotla. Delhi have got used to the absence of their star players, often on national duty. But the team management will be disappointed with the failure of the younger crop to perform consistently and grab the opportunities that have come their way. Kohli, however, has maintained his form in the first two rounds of this Ranji Trophy season. Skipper Mithun Manhas will go in with a debutant opener in Unmukt Chand after the twin failures of veteran Chetan Sharma, who wore Delhi colours after a decade. The seam attack is set to look different again, the third time in as many games. The No. 5 and No. 6 slots in the batting line-up will be a toss up between Mayank Tehlan, recalled Gaurav Chabbra and Yogesh Nagar. A sprinkling of grass on the pitch will tempt Delhi to rest young off-spinner Manoj Chauhan despite his impressive debut while Gujarat skipper Parthiv Patel is likely to stick to a three-pacer formula after off-spinner Mohnish Parmar was called for chucking again. Both sides will be more worried about their batting, which is largely dependent on a couple of well-established players. Gujarat had a great start to the season taking the first innings lead against Railways and then beating Saurashtra in the next game. Delhi took the first innings lead against Tamil Nadu in an away game. The visitors, though, have momentum on their side. While Delhi have drawn both their matches and have four points in two matches, Gujarat bagged three points from their opening tie against Railways and went on to register a two-wicket win against Saurashtra at home. While batsmen starred for Gujarat against Railways at the Karnail Singh Stadium, bowlers took collective honours to lead the side to a second round win at home. The likes of Salil Yadav, Ishwar Choudhary and Ashraf Makda will put Delhi batsmen to the test. The key man, however, will be in-form paceman Siddharth Trivedi. Gujarat will bank on him for breakthroughs. Both teams will have to battle conditions as well. As hazy mornings lead into dreary afternoons and gloomy evenings, teams will struggle to finish the allotted quota of 90 overs.

Tough task for Haryana against mighty Karnataka Haryana will face the difficult task of stopping a mighty Karnataka when the two sides meet in the Ranji Trophy Super League Group ‘B' match at the Chaudhary Bansi Lal cricket stadium here from Wednesday. More... Tough task for Haryana Principal Correspondent LAHLI (ROHTAK): Haryana will face the difficult task of stopping a mighty Karnataka when the two sides meet in the Ranji Trophy Super League Group ‘B' match at the Chaudhary Bansi Lal cricket stadium here from Wednesday. Last year’s finalists Karnataka put their best foot forward, picking up five points against Punjab in their Ranji season opener last Saturday, and are raring to go against Haryana here over the next four days. More than Haryana, it is the weather that is the worrying factor for Karnataka who are eyeing full points from this outing. But Haryana, having gained a promotion into the Elite group last year, despite having had two bad opening games, their innings and more loss to Baroda in the second game, not withstanding, will be looking to show that their performance in the Plate group was no flash in the pan. “Although Haryana gained promotion from Plate league last season, we are not taking them easily. All the matches in the league are important. We will continue to put in our best efforts,” said Vinay. banking on pace Vinay has more reason to smile. Karnataka possesses a lethal medium pace attack with Abhimanyu Mithun, Vinay and S Arvind. Amongst the trio, two do come to the party as has been evident in the previous match, the trio claiming 19 wickets, and the whole of last season. However, it is the form of veteran left arm spinner Sunil Joshi that is a cause for concern. Even with his experience, Joshi is certainly struggling to get amongst the wickets. This might force Karnataka to sacrifice a batsman to play a second spinner. In that scenario they will drop opening batsman KL Rahul to accommodate a second spinner in Udit Patel with CM Gautam opening the innings. With a half century on debut under his belt, Rahul will have to learn the bitterness of clinging on to the ropes of hopes. With a sound batting line-up and a formidable bowling attack, Karnataka has proved in its first outing what it is capable of. Beating home team Punjab convincingly was no mean feat and the finalist of the last season will be up in confidence against a lower-ranked side like Haryana. Led by its captain and bowling spearhead Vinay Kumar, who captured eight wickets against Punjab, the Karnataka pace battery has another international Abhimanyu Mithun and rookie left-arm medium pacer S. Aravind, who claimed seven wickets at Mohali, in its rank. The trio will look forward to exploit the seamer-friendly conditions here. Robin Uthappa's big hundred might have made a substantial contribution in Karnataka's victory last week, but no one can undermine the useful contributions by five other batsmen. However, the last thing the touring side would do is not to take Haryana lightly. The home team had given Mumbai a run for its money in the quarterfinal last year at the same venue. After achieving a good start against Himachal Pradesh this season, Haryana suffered an innings defeat against Baroda. It has to get its act together and improve its batting a few notches to put up a decent fight against Karnataka. So far, it has been heavily dependent on its Tamil Nadu-import Hemang Badani and youngster Manav Sharma, who has played a couple of good knocks. It's high time other batsmen also struck form. “So far, we have failed in just one of the four innings. We have to improve our batting a bit. We have to field well too as this was the area where we lacked in the last match,” said Haryana coach Ashwini Kumar.

Depleted hosts Mumbai have uphill task ahead against Railways After having chosen not to go for the kill in its previous two matches, an injury-hit Mumbai will look to register its first outright win against a low on morale Railways in the Group A Elite Division match at the Bandra Kurla Complex here on Wednesday. More... Depleted hosts Mumbai have uphill task ahead Unseasoned rain on Monday night not just blew the pitch covers at Mumbai Cricket Association's Bandra Kurla Complex but also seem to have planted a few doubts in Mumbai's think-tank about their approach towards the Ranji Trophy Super League encounter against Railways that begins on Wednesday. Unexpected showers over the last two nights rendered the practice wickets unplayable forcing Mumbai to abandon their outdoor net sessions and go indoors on Tuesday. The outfield was, of course wet and the heavy showers had left even the covered match pitch damp. The clubhouse sight screen too could not stand against strong winds and was lying flat on the ground. And the fallen sight screen was very much symbolized the morale of the defending champions Mumbai, which seems to have hit a new low. Already being criticised for not registering a single outright win in two outings, Mumbai got a shocker when three of their crucial players were declared unfit a day before their third round Ranji Trophy League encounter against Railways. A back spasm to Mumbai’s pace spearhead Ajit Agarkar and an ankle injury to Abhishek Nayar have forced them out of the match starting on Thursday. However, the worst news of the day was Avishkar Salvi’s shoulder injury that rules him out for the whole season. In a sticky situation right now, skipper Wasim Jaffer would be hoping that it doesn’t pour overnight for the third successive time and his young side delivers against an experienced Murali Kartik led Railways. Jaffer said that outright wins are very important to qualify to the knock out stage. He added that the youngsters, who have been included as replacement to the unfit players, will have to grab the opportunity and stay positive throughout. “We need to have a couple of outright wins. We need to stay positive and this is the right time for the youngsters to stand up and give their best as we have lost two major fast bowlers in Agarkar and Salvi and an all-rounder in Nayar,” said Jaffer. The responsibility to lead the pace attack would be on the young shoulders of Dhaval Kulkarni, who did quite a decent job in the last match. Seamers Murtuza Hussain and Javed Khan will look to grab the opportunity with both hands. Jaffer knows that the Railways cannot be taken lightly. “They have some of the best players in Murali Kartik, Sanjay Bangar and JP Yadav. They play good cricket and hence it would be a challenge.” With six points in hand from two matches, both because of first innings wins, Mumbai has a tough task ahead and an opportunity to register their first outright win of the season playing at home. The BKC wicket is considered to be a batsman's paradise and the defending champions have been content to bat first and ensure a first innings lead at this venue since last season. But the ground staff hardly got any time to prepare the 22-yard strip on Tuesday due to overcast conditions and it will be a miracle if the wicket dries completely and the match starts before lunch. The wicket is sure to have enough juice to assist the bowlers in the first couple of hours and any captain would be tempted to put in the opposition after winning the toss. But the decision may not be that straight forward for Mumbai skipper Wasim Jaffer who will miss two of his front-line seamers - Ajit Agarkar and Aavishkar Salvi - and the back-up man Abhishek Nayar due to injuries. While Salvi has been ruled out for the remaining season due to a shoulder injury, Agarkar (bad back) and Nayar (ankle) will definitely miss the Railways tie. This means the hosts will once again bank on their strong batting line-up to pocket at least three points. Jaffer has himself been in great form scoring three centuries in four innings so far, while make-shift opener Omkar Gurav, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma have also been impressive. Teams Mumbai: W Jaffer, A Rahane, S Kukreja, R Sharma, P Naik, O Gurav, K Waingankar, R Powar, S Yadav, R Raje, I Abdulla, J Khan, D Kulkarni, V Yelligati, M Hussain Railways: M Kartik, S Bangar, P Awasthi, V Cheluvaraj, F Fazal, S Gehlot, Y Goud, M Rawat, K Sharma, T Singh, J Yadav, M Suresh, V Tokas

Bengal have a point to prove against Assam Bengal need at least three points from this match to stay in hunt for a knock-out berth. Assam, led by experienced Amol Muzumder, however, are no pushovers. More... Bengal have a point to prove A STAFF REPORTER Calcutta: Bengal need at least three points from this match to stay in hunt for a knock-out berth. Assam, led by experienced Amol Muzumder, however, are no pushovers. So, an exciting contest is expected when the two sides face each other in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group A match at Eden Gardens from Wednesday. The wicket was slow and low in the last match at this venue. Mumbai batted big and had Bengal under the cosh before they let the hosts off the hook. This match is going to be played on a new wicket, but it is unlikely to behave differently. Toss, once again, is going to be important. The hasty preparation at the Eden Gardens was symbolic on Tuesday. Bengal were jolted out of bed against defending champions Mumbai, and the hosts’ efforts to keep the nightmare at bay was writ large in their preparations before their Ranji fixture against Assam from Wednesday. Bengal players went through the paces under the watchful eyes of coach Woorkeri Raman and if the hosts have taken any lesson from their last outing, they have to shore up their performance in all departments of the game. This would be Bengal’s last home match and anything less than three points will rankle if not dent their hopes in the tournament ahead. The unresponsive Eden wicket drew flak from both teams after the last match, and Raman had said there was not much help for the bowlers. Though the Assam tie will be played on a new strip, the Bengal coach doesn’t expect much change. “Well, the wicket cannot change overnight. It is flat and we will try and make the right adjustments to make it all click,” Raman said. The Ranji Trophy elite group ‘A' league match between Assam and Bengal, beginning at the Eden Gardens here on Wednesday, will, in all likelihood, be a battle for the first innings lead. Keeping this in mind, both the combatants have bolstered their batting, taking a cue from the previous game between the host and Mumbai which produced runs aplenty. “This pitch looks a typical Eden Gardens wicket,” pointed out Assam skipper Amol Muzumdar. “We will go into the match with three pacers and two spinners, the second being a batting all-rounder S. Sriram.” The toss would be crucial once again and, expectedly, the team who calls it right will be tempted to bat first. For Bengal, Arindam Das and Manoj Tiwary, have to take more responsibility, as the two form the fulcrum of the team’s batting. In the bowling department, Ashok Dinda looks a doubtful starter owing to fever. But, overall, the Bengal seamers will have to be careful in their line and length. Much will depend on veteran Ranadeb Bose to make early inroads, in case Bengal are sent in to bowl first. Fielding has been a major concern for Bengal and Raman ensured to grind his boys through rigorous fielding drills. Bengal had dropped catches at crucial junctures against Mumbai that had compounded their woes. About Laxmi Ratan Shukla, who will be playing his 100th first class match Wednesday, Raman said: “It shows his level of fitness and his commitment to the game.” Though Raman said he was not keen to tinker with the team’s batting line-up, he would expect his top-order batsmen to spend more time at the crease. Assam meanwhile, seemed earnest in their efforts at the nets. The minnows, who graduated from the Plate group this season, had a good show against Railways in their last match. Captain Amol Muzumdar and Sridharan Sreeram are the mainstays of the team. Bengal wouldn’t want to write them off. “We are a growing team. Sure, Bengal are big, but we are not bad either,” Muzumdar said. Being the newbies and slotted in a tough group, Assam have nothing to lose. Muzumdar and Assam coach Subhrajit Saikia tagged the toss inconsequential. Saikia thought the Eden wicket will assist seamers initially, but will gradually develop into a batting wicket. Assam are likely to regain the services of medium pacer Abu Nachim Ahmed, who will start his Ranji season after an injury lay-off (Challenger Trophy). Dinda doubtful Bengal's medium-pacer Ashok Dinda is running temperature and is doubtful, said team coach W.V. Raman. If Dinda fails to be ready on the morrow, Bengal will give Mohammed Sami Ahmed his maiden cap. Both the teams have played two games already. Bengal picked up three points from the Delhi game and one from the Mumbai tie. Assam, on the other hand, lost to Tamil Nadu and managed to earn three from the previous game against Railways. Assam's batsmen have not clicked so far. Shib Sankar Roy has been drafted in and Abu Nachim Ahmed, who missed the first two ties, will come in to strengthen the bowling. Dheeraj Goswami's fiver against Railways gave Assam the first innings lead. Bengal is unlikely to disturb the batting line-up, which will mean experienced Abhishek Jhunjhunwala will have to wait for one more match to get a look in. Wriddhiman Saha's poor form is a cause for worry for the team management. Rohan Banerjee, who came in at No. 3, will look to get some runs to cement his place. The elegant left-hander Writam Porel will get another chance to score big after having made 71 in his debut innings. Teams Bengal (from): Manoj Tiwary (capt), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Arindam Das, Ranadeb Bose, Abhishek Chowdhury, Ashok Dinda, Arindam Ghosh, Shreevats Goswami, Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Saurasish Lahiri, Anustup Majumdar, Iresh Saxena, Shami Ahmed, Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Shib Sagar Singh. Unadkat blow for Saurashtra against TN Summoned to fill in for the injured Zaheer Khan for the third and final Test against New Zealand at Nagpur, left-arm seamer Jaidev Unadkat received a further boost to his nascent first class career. More... Unadkat blow for Saurashtra Special Correspondent Rajkot: Summoned to fill in for the injured Zaheer Khan for the third and final Test against New Zealand at Nagpur, left-arm seamer Jaidev Unadkat received a further boost to his nascent first class career. But his selection to the Indian squad has struck a big blow to Saurashtra's bowling for the crucial Ranji Trophy Elite Group ‘A' match against Tamil Nadu that begins at the Khanderi Stadium here on Wednesday. The first two weeks of the Ranji Trophy 2010-11 has not been good for Saurashtra. It suffered a two-wicket defeat against Gujarat last week after a Pratik Mehta century enabled it to eke out a draw against Mumbai in the first week of November. Lying at the bottom of the eight-team Group ‘A' with one point, Saurashtra needed the energy and budding talent of Unadkat to lead the new-ball attack against a powerful Tamil Nadu batting line-up. His absence will virtually take the sting out of the home team attack. In the last few years, Saurashtra has proved more than a handful to deal with for the top teams in the national championship, thanks to Cheteshwar Pujara's batting skills, the all-round ability of Ravindra Jadeja and worthy contributions with bat and ball by seasoned campaigners. Unadkat was a sure shot to make the cut this season. His rise as a young left-arm seamer has been rapid, especially following his showing for India in the under-19 World Cup and for India ‘A' in the two-Test series against West Indies ‘A' in England. He impressed in the Irani Cup against Mumbai (four for 41), but the Mumbai batsmen had the full measure of him in the Ranji match at Bandra-Kurla complex. He picked up five wickets against Gujarat though. Saurashtra faces problems aplenty without Pujara and Unadkat for the match against Tamil Nadu. After two league matches the Elite Group ‘A' has thrown up a points table that will make every match count for the fancied teams. Tamil Nadu is placed second behind Gujarat (8) with six points. The other teams in the group are Mumbai, Delhi, Bengal, Railways, Assam and Saurashtra. Tamil Nadu won the first match against Assam to gain five points and picked up one in the drawn match against Delhi. Full points from this match would please Tamil Nadu; it has the batting might and bowling resources, even without L. Balaji, to dictate terms in the next four days. The teams (from): Tamil Nadu : Dinesh Karthik (captain), Abhinav Mukund, S. Anirudha, K.B. Arun Karthik, S. Badrinath, R. Sathish, K. Shrivasudeva Das, N. Einstein, C. Ganapathy, V. Yomahesh, Sunil Sam, R. Ashwin, M. Prabhu, R. Aushik Srinivas, U. Sushil, R. Sutheesh. Saurashtra: Jaydev Shah (captain), Sitanushu Kotak, Chirag Pathak, Ravindra Jadeja, Pratik Mehta, Rakesh Dhruve, Arpid Vasavada, Kamlesh Makwana, Sheldon Jackson, Jayesh Odedara, Sandeep Maniyar, Bhushan Chauhan, Hardik Rathod, Sagar Jogiyani. Umpires: Paschim Pathak (Mumbai) and S.N.R. Prabhu (Karnataka); Match Referee: Vijendrasinh Yadav .
