Ponting to miss india tour !

The Australian team on Wednesday received a major jolt with captain Ricky Ponting [Images] being ruled out for the rest of the ICC [Images] Twenty20 World Cup due to injury which also rendered him doubtful for the tour of India. In Tuesday's Super Eight match against Pakistan, which Australia lost by six wickets, Ponting suffered a hamstring strain while batting. Ponting's injury came at a time when the world champions are struggling to make it to the semi-finals of the Twenty20 World Cup and would take on Sri Lanka [Images] in a crucial Super Eight encounter on Thursday. Along with Pakistan, the winner of the match will reach the last four stage from Group F. Australia's physiotherapist Alex Kountouris said the injury may force Ponting out of action for four weeks, which means he may miss out on the seven-match one-day series against India beginning on September 29. "Over the next three to five days we will have a much better indication of where it's leading, so we will know whether he will have to go home or be able to go to India," Kountouris told mediapersons. "Hopefully, he will take some part in the series in India. The best case scenario is a couple of weeks. The worst case scenario is four weeks," Kountouris said, adding "he just took off for a run and felt it a bit." The physio said the Aussie skipper might be experiencing such an injury for the first time in his career. "He was stretching his left leg because he was not sure if there was a problem. I don't think he has had a hamstring strain before," Kountouris said. Due to his wife's illness, Ponting reached South Africa just two days prior to the tournament began. But Kountouris is not sure whether Ponting's late arrival or the return to action after a four-month interval led to the injury. "It can happen anytime. We get them anytime in a season. He has been here for a week now so really I could not say with confidence that it had anything to do with it. It's just coincidence." Meanwhile, Cricket Australia's national selection panel said that Tasmanian fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus would replace the injured Shaun Tait in the 14-man squad for the upcoming tour of India. "Unfortunately Shaun hasn't recovered in time from his surgery to be able to take part in the upcoming tour to India. He is however expected to make a complete recovery in the next few weeks," selection committee chairman Andrew Hilditch said. trans.gif

286809.htmlWill Indian team make Ben Hilfenhaus (Tait's replacement) a hero? Ben Hilfenhaus can safely lay down his trowel after a series of dramatic performances in his first two seasons catapulted him to a national contract in 2007. Two years ago Hilfenhaus was earning money on a building site, but his ability to swing the ball away at 140kph has earned him a six-figure pay packet. "It has been a fast ride," he said after picking up the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year prize. A month earlier he represented Australia for the first time in a one-day international on his home ground at Hobart, taking only 12 balls to get his maiden wicket when he trapped Brendon McCullum. Now he waits for a second chance. A strong and fit man from Ulverstone in northern Tasmania, Hilfenhaus is only the second fast bowler from the state to play for Australia after Greg Campbell, who is Ricky Ponting's uncle. While shaping the ball away is his specialty, he can also angle it in and his repertoire was crucial to the Tigers' maiden Pura Cup victory in 2006-07. Hilfenhaus' 60 wickets at 25.38, the third most in the competition's history, included three five-wicket hauls, but his back-breaking workload must be monitored over the next couple of seasons. Last summer he delivered 509.1 overs in the first-class arena, nearly 200 more than any of his domestic fast-bowling counterparts. In his opening season Hilfenhaus quickly built a strong reputation and after 39 wickets at 30.82 was named in the Australia A squad for the Top End series. Hilfenhaus, a former national under-19 representative, also accepted an invitation to return to the Academy after first attending the facility when it was based in Adelaide in 2002. He was Man of the Match in his second game against Victoria and his first-season highlight was a ten-wicket haul, including 7 for 58 in the second innings, against New South Wales.

Whew. Given the way our new ball bowlers have been in ODIs recently, it's a relief. I guess we'll see someone else massacring Sandaaskar instead. I'm quite interested in seeing how Hilf does. I've been impressed every time I've seen him before - decent action, solid pace (peaks in the low 140s) that's very good for a pure swing bowler. He's definitely a talent for the future, but right now I'm curious to see how he fares against such a high calibre lineup in such (hopefully) unfriendly conditions. If Ganguly and Tendulkar target him, it should be a fun battle to watch. I think this is India's best ever chance to really hurt Australia. Home conditions, no Ponting as captain (although the last time that happened, it worked against them with their middle order actually being strengthened by including four of Australia's best players of spin), and Tendulkar and Ganguly firing at the top of the order with a motivated, cohesive side after them. Not to mention Australia's bowling missing a couple of serious spearheads - McGrath retired, and Tait on the shelf. Instead we all get to see Bung Lee snarling and roaring in and hopefully doing an Agarkar with 15 kmh more on the ball.

Big blow ? Why ? I've lost count of how many times I've read what a dud RP is in Indian conditions. Sounds like a big blow for India.
yeah ur rite.. actually its a big blow for India.. I think theres something fishy here. Ponting heard Harby back in the ODI team.. he started to pee in his pants the moment he heard the news.. thts y he feigned injury and escaped frm getting beaten by harby... Ponting is such a loser...:D

Chalo this injury will save him from the ignominy of usual 1 0 1 0 scores in india

Captain recovering well from hamstring strain Ponting to remain with squad for India tour Cricinfo staff September 20, 2007 spacer.gif311584.jpg?alt=1 Ricky Ponting strained his hamstring against Pakistan and had to bat with a runner © Getty Images Ricky Ponting will remain with the Australian squad for the seven-ODI tour of India beginning in the last week of September even though he was ruled out of the remainder of the ICC World Twenty20 with a hamstring strain. Ponting strained his hamstring while running between the wickets in Australia's Super Eights' match against Pakistan and completed his innings with the help of a runner. Alex Kountouris, the physio, said that Ponting's recovery was progressing well and was hopeful that he would take some part during the one-day series in India. "Ricky Ponting is making excellent progress following his hamstring strain in the game against Pakistan on Tuesday. Ricky will be coming on the tour of India and will resume playing as soon as he is medically cleared," national selection panel chairman, Andrew Hilditch said. "Brad Haddin has been added to the touring squad and will take part in the Indian tour until such time as Ricky recovers. Although Ricky's injury is very disappointing it gives us an opportunity to recognise the outstanding performances of Brad Haddin domestically and in his limited opportunities for Australia in the past 12 months." Shane Watson was another injury concern for Australia after he left the field with a sore hamstring during their Super Eights' clash against Sri Lanka. Watson had come into the match as a replacement for Ponting. "Shane felt some soreness in the left hamstring during today's game and we will continue to assess this over the next 48 hours before any decision is made regarding his availability," Kountouris said. Australia are scheduled to leave South Africa for India on September 25 and would play the first ODI on September 29 in Bangalore. © Cricinfo
