India 2027 World Cup core squad discussion
mikeypbadana86 replied to rangeelaraja's topic in Cricket Talk
Gambhir may do 'jayasuriya of 1996' on sooryavanshi and may push for his selection. Selectors may use this as an excuse to put preassure on rohit as well. -
The context was in world cup knock outs which is why I picked sachins 6 ODI woldcup knock out records. I watched sachin and kohli both in their prime. I always felt sachin did not handle the knock out final preassure as well as he could have with his ability. .has dropped catches for eg Steev waughs knock in world Cup semis after Gibbs drop Thats right. waugh was dropped once 2011 ODI WC against pakistan, sachin was dropped 4 times including a controversial DRS decision. My point was to highlight how kohli could have ended up on right side of the luck in 2019 ODI WC semfinal against NZ where his wicket was umpires call. If the umpire gave not out, he could have survived and he might as well have chased it.

Keeping personal bias aside, objectively kohli is good in knock outs . Kohli scored a half century in 2016 IPL final. No team ever since with 3rd or 4th placing in the IPL played finals or won a final. If kohli is a choker as per your claim , why is he selectively failing in ODI WC? Before we talk ODI's , lets talk about holisitically. 2014 t20 semis Knock out innings by kohli 2014 t20 final- Highest scorer Yuvraj messed up playing 11 off 21 balls 2016 t20 world cup. Virtual quarter final against Aus 82 2016 t20 semis against WI. 85+ Ashwin messed up bolwing two no balls against WI in semis 2022 t20 MCG high preassure 26 off 8 against PAK. 2024 t20 final . Good knock of 76 when team lost 3 early wickets 2013 champions trophy semis and final . Kohli scored 50+ in semis and highest scorer in final 2017 champions trophy 80+ in semis 2025 champions trophy 80+ in semis ODI world cup's 2011 . 35 off 49 and built a crucial partnership with gambhir. As a youngster, it was a good knock under preassure specially when India lost sehwag and sachin early 2015 ODI WC semi final. failed 2019 ODI WC semi final. Kohli's dimissal was unlucky. The wicket (LBW) was umpires call with ball barely clipping the top of leg stump. 2023 ODI WC world cup semis century. He was 35 and no longer in peak, you cant compare shreyas knock to his. He still scored a century 2023 ODI WC final. Kohli scored 54 off 63 balls and all set for a good knock. Its KL rahul who messed up with 66 off 105 balls. 2027 ODI WC semis & Final --------Law of averages will even out since he failed in 2015/2019, he is gonna score in 2027. Mohammed shami has better WC record than wasim akram. Does that mean Shami is an all time great like Wasim akram? Brayan lara had only one quarter final innings against SA in 1996. Does that mean Brayan lara is a lesser batter than Aravinda de silva? if you are attributing Kohli choking in high preassure knock outs, he should have done that across t20, Champions trophy too but he scored mountain of runs in knock outs there. Kohli is no mental midget like KL rahul. I don't care about Tendulkar. His fans don't tout him to be the "greatest", "chasemaster", "king of chases" etc. God of cricket, cricket god, master blaster etc to fail in 2011 WC final, 2003 ODI wc final , 2007 ODI WC virtual knock out against Bangladesh/SL, 1999 ODI WC failure? 2011 ODI semis Sachin scored and he might have fit your 'scoring in knock out'....Sachin was dropped 4 times in ODI WC semis. I am not denying Kohli has average ODI WC record, i am sure he is gonna end up on right side of luck/law of averages in 2027 ODI WC. we can re-asses this thread/argument once 2027 ODI WC is concluded.

So true. I have watched peak sachin and peak virat. Sachin sure played great knocks like 1998 sharjah desert storm and 2003 ODI centurion against PAK. I do not remeber other knock out innings he has played unlike virat who is temperamentally better in KO. Sachin reminds me of roger federer where as kohli reminds me djokovic. The former is all grace and elegance, the later is all mental toughness and tenacity.
-
Not entirely true. peak wasim vs peak sachin was an even battle at best . 2003 ODI world cup centurion knock was against great pak bowling but wasim/waqar were playing their last world cup. India lost multuple sharjah toureny finals against PAK with wasim equall being good against sachin. Kohli success against them can be excused by Pak bowlers being poor. Nope. They did 152/0 with shaheen claiming KL/Rohit with peach of deliveries in 2021 and PAK was cruising along in 2022 MCG match ( PAK was finalist in the 2022 t20 world cup). I agree the other ODI apperances in 2023 Asia cup/2023 ODI world cup, their bowling is subpar. 2017 mohanmed amir was great too in champions trophy.

Is Kohli the greatest ever clutch player amongst greats ?

That makes out of 15 clutch moments, kohli delivered on 12 -

For got to add 2024 t20 final knock against SA 2025 ODI champions trophy semi final knock against Australia. -
After 34 overs, out of the two new balls bowling side can pick one ball which usually aids in reverse swing etc .

Is Kohli the greatest ever clutch player amongst greats ?
mikeypbadana86 replied to rangeelaraja's topic in Cricket Talk
pady upton the former mental conditioning coach attributed clutch performance of any player is related to "staying in the moment of the game and playing the ball on merit" which is called being in a zone which does not happen or the preassure does not let this happen to great players. I think, kohli by far the best clutch batter india produced.Number of t20 and odi clutch innings he played albiet the team let him down not winning at times. 2011 ODI world cup final . Knock of 35, small contribution but vital in final 2013 champions trophy final. top scorer in a rain curtailed match 2014 t20 semis. Winning knock of 70 odd against South africa 2014 t20 final. 50+ in a losing cause 2016 t20 must win quarter final famous 82 against Aus 2016 t20 final. 89 odd against WI. Ashwin bowled two no balls which costed us the final. 2017 champions trophy semis against BL. 50+ 2022 t20 world cup against PAK famous kohli goes out of the ground. 82+ against PAK 2023 ODI world cup semis. 100 against NZ 2023 ODI final. 54 against AUS. could have gone on to score 100 but for unfortunate inside edge dismissal. Notable failures: 2019 worldcup semis against NZ . Unfortunate umpires call dismissal 2015 ODI semis. failure. 2017 champions trophy failure. out of 13 key moments, he delivered 10 times. i do not recall an other modern gate who holds similar record in knock outs/clutch matches. Definetly kohli can be in zone in crucial games which is not easy for many. -
2013 ct final 2017 ct semis and 2025 ct semis make it 3 knock out performance 2014 t20 final 2016 t20 semis 2014 t20 semis and 2014 t20 final make it 4 knock out innings T20 worldcups and champions trophy's are icc tournies too . Kohli did great. Yes his odi knock outs are underwhelming in comparison. Why would he selectively choke? 2023 semis and final: 113 and 50 2011 ODI final an innings of 35 2019 is his true failure. Talent and elegance wise tendulkar >> kohli Temperament/mental toughness + ruthlness ness kohli >> sachin Number of matches it didn't help rohit didn't even play 5 overs in knock outs. Sure kohli had great team around but he is a victim of his own approach to game where every thing can be overcome with grit/passion. All the time being intense and charged up helped him get the best out of himself but in a teams cause unless the other players have similar mindset , its not ideal which is why we see mixed results under his captaincy but for tests. A captain has to be great man manager , with an aussie mindset he has he doesn't fit in to be great man manager which meant mixed results. I am no fan boy of him as you accuse. He is no choker is what my point is. Why would he choose to choke in 2015 odi semis and 2019 semis and perform well in remaining t20 world cup and ICC champion trophies and also 2011/2023 odi world cups. 26 off 8 balls with 100k people watching in stadium with 2 years of bad form, he managed to win it. A choker won't. The only reasonable failure i attribute to his 2015 and 2019 failures is , kohli tends to take the game deep which means he will not be aggresive until he is set which gives bowler a chance , May be this is the plausible explaination.

Rohit's standing and Kohli's ODI world cup standing record is same. Rohit lost in finals, kohli lost in semis in difficult swing/seam. Rohit to his advantage has everything under control in 2023 odi world, despite that chose pitch doctoring in 2023 ODI final. Other than that both captains lost due to key players missing due to injury, rohit losing pandya and kohli losing Shikhar dhawan who is more clutch than mental midget KL rahul and also a lefty at the top. T20's Rohit is unparalled and rohit >> Kohli Tests kohli is unparalleled , kohli >> Rohit.

shall i put the 2011 final innings where a certain legend goes to the pavillion, driving on off? I am no die hard fan. Temeprementally some one like KL rahul is a choker so is DK etc but not Kohli. 2011- you cant call kohli a choker since a nobody kohli outscored tendulkar and built a crucial partnership as admitted by Dhoni in post match 2015- I agree he failed, the solace is he tried attacking jhonson 2019- Umpires call dimission 2023 semis -113 you will hide in a corner 2023 final- 50 + you will go missing 2024 t20 final- 76 crucial match winning runs 2025 ct semis - 84 crucial runs You should take the overall sample size.

It was a stumping numbnut, get your facts straight! And yes it was bad, but not so much that rest of the chumps completely forgot batting on their own. Ganguly alone won the 1998 independence cup final. He was the leading batter from 1996-2002. Nat west final too, ganguly had great contribution. Sehwag emerged, dravid emerged, yuvi/kaif/earlier robin singh/jadeja. Do not give the crap of "one man carrying the burden when we had likes of all these batters who were good in their own right". Its ganguly who scored a magnificient hundread in 2000 icc tournament finals. Just one true performance? What the * does that even mean? You think Oz win that SF vs SA in 99 if Bevan didn't score a 50, you think Warne was the solo performer, or Ponting in 2003 If 50 in 2011 QF against AUS of sachin was in winning cause, Kohlis magnificient 113 against NZ in 2023 ODI semis is choke knock??? How ...... Oh STFU, 150 was defendable on many of those pitches especially with the rain interruption! And you're counting someone's runs for majority of who's career 2 new balls were the norm - what was the avg team total post 2012 & between 92-2012 you know the massive disparity right? Srilanka used to chase for run from 1996-2000 , any score in the excess of 250 plus. Peak 90's pak used to chase 240+ for fun. you say 150 was defendable. Dopped catches? If it weren't for dropped catches choke master would avg in single digits in tests in Eng if you are ignoring t20 records of kohli, why are you bringing in tests as if they were ICC knock outs? Overall, you were saying the choke legend sachin could not perform in 6 ODI world cup, innumerable knock outs since the bowling standards were better? Imagine the modern players with the advent of media(social media, commercilizaiton and reach of cricket to the next level) . If kohli did not play two new balls post 2012, sure sachin did not face the quartlet of west indies fast bowling legends with out helmets. My reason to bring sachin is to draw home the point, Kohli singlehandedly owns sachin in ICC knock outs/overall impactful knock out performances. Sehwag /ponting rates kohli above sachin, whole cricketing world does that. No choker can be rated that way. Neither the stats nor the batting class lies.

I have watched sachin and virat in their prime. For argument sake, assume virat is choke master for being the man of the tournament in 2014 t20, 2016 t20 and 2023 ODI world cup. multiple champion trophy knock out performances, multiple t20 final perfomances, odi century and half century in 2023 ODI semis and final. 1992 The winning score was not 150, NZ could not defend 260 in semis against PAK, do not talk crap. 1992 1996 1999 2003 2007 2011 out of 6 world cups Sachins only true performance in knock out was in 2011 Quarter final where he scored a 50 ( in addition to gambhir/yuvraj). 1996- he scored 60 odd but foolishly threw it away with a silly run out which resulted in India 99/1 to 120/8. A set batter should take the team through. 2011 semis---4 dropped catches 2003 final- you know the answer 2011 final- you know the answer 2007 crucial knock out match against BAN/SL- you know the answer 1999- 2 knock out matches against NZ and AUS- Super six- You know the answer. If kohli is a choke master, sachin is a choke legend. You should be consistent in calling out "choke legends" across formats and generations. If you are attributing kohli has tendency to choke in knock outs, what explains his multiple knock out innings in 2014 t20 semis, 2016 t20 semis, 2016 t20 virtual quarter final against pak,2022 t20 once in generaitonal 26 off 8 against PAK( melbourne 2022), 2013 champions trophy final, 2017 champions trophy semi final, 2025 champions trophy final and 2024 t20 final knocks. How on earth kohli does not choke in other ICC tournies but only selectively chokes to fit in the "fake data" by certain troller @RITTER
-
Nothing much separates between virat and sachin. 12 matches 432 runs(virat) 14 matches 574 runs (sachin) I don't care what you call him, he's a certified choker & grade A failure in KO games! check his champions trophy ICC record in knock outs. t20 knock out record. 2019 ODI WC was on a bowling paradise where west indies in 1983 could not chase 183, pak could not score 132. t20 2024 final, 2023 champions trophy semis were both knock outs where he had contribution.

I think, arjuna rangatunga is definitely better. He instilled the belief, created the brand of cricket Srilanka did play in 1996. He is bit rohit (tad less mingles with team) + dhoni(equally authoritarian/imposing).Considering Srilanka was present day bangaldesh like in 1996 and to get the best out of the team and play a new brand of cricket and winning worldcup is a great achivement by rana tunga. Even Kapil dev > rohit considering he first one the world cup for India in 1983 and similar to arjuna, he made a minnow team like India win a world cup with his sheer belief and not to forget the famous 175 not out againts ZIM. Had it not been for his knock, india would have crashed out of world cup. Ganguly- Attitude dikhaon raat bhar, trophies jeetu Jht bhar I disagree. 90's indian team was crap. Ganguly made them compete in overseas, got parity with PAK team which was otherwise thrashing India. Created core group of younger players like yuvraj, bhajji, zaheer, sehwag and ashish nehra who went on to play 2011 world cup. India bundled out Srilanka for 200 in 2002 champions trophy final twice in two consecuive days which was rained off. Indias trophy ended as joint winners. Neverthless one ICC trophy here 2003 ODI world cup final. Considering aussies were unbeaten in 1999, 2003 and 2007 world cup's Nothing much could be done here. Still a great achivement considering India were finalists after 20 years. 2004-05 winnings against Pak in ODI/test series after 50 years(first indian team to beat pakistan in PAK), natwest final win, 1-1 in australia, winning in england were some of the great things happened. Rohit > Ganguly as a captain, i meant to say Ganguly has his own legacy. Overall Rohit is better than Dhoni who has similar record in ICC tournaments, tad better considering he faced SL in final's and no pitch doctoring was done with due helping india too. 2023 ODI world cup would have been won had dravid been tactially good and not messed up pitch condition. Worst that that, politics were in play to schedule final in Ahmedabad.

none of them are across the line hack shots. I am sure, legendary saeeed anwar knows better than all of us ,quote "Its impossible to pick the shine/swing/movement from the hand, as a batter you are always second guessing". Unquote. Even ajay jadeja said the same recently. Batsment when in form tend to second guess accurately but the bowler can always outhink. Its foolish to assume a bowler can never get a bastment out, how ever good/great he may be. You should define whats choking, choking is India going from 99/1 to 120/8 in 1996 semis, choking is WI failing to chase 212 from 165/2 in world cup semis in 1996. Similarly choking is 2011 ODI semis where pak could not chase 260. If virat has got out like pant/dhoni/pandya after getting out, that would qualify as choking. I agree, he failed in 2019 semis but dont put this under choking category. ou'll probably justify his last 8(9?) carbon copy dismissals in Oz as unplayable deliveries as well out of form and easy dismissials should i say!
