Sorry show me one team who has taken punt on a rookie for major tournament.It just does not happen.Pant will get his chances.

But you have to understand the situation then, India was relative weaker then and did not enjoy the success it has now. Yes Yuvi was one batsman who did debut in major tournament but will Pant play in playing eleven even if he was selected for squad. I don't think they viewed him an opener. It is early season you never know what kind of wickets you will get and it would harm the rookie big time if he were to flop there as an opener.

 

Sachin was not selected for 1989 WI tour because selectors thought it would harm him more if he failed and they were proved right.

We've done badly in the sense we haven't won even one ICC tourney over the last 4 years. We played 3 IMO - WC and 2 WT20 and came up short everytime. When you are always coming up short it's time to start improving coz for us just going to semis shouldn't be enough.

 

IMO SA have done a great job in bringing in youngsters like Rabada and De Kock and we should do so ASAP. I don't really care what other teams do or don't do coz they may be in a different situation. Aus and Eng are well settled odi units, SA looks strong with addition of Rabada and De Kock, and frankly India should not be comparing itself with others.

 

Indian team is short of firepower and Pant gives us the best chance to do so. Pant could be our answer to Greatbatch in 92 WC or Jayasuriya in 96. If it were up to me I would have played Pant and asked him to go after the bowling at the top of the order. No point in sticking with status quo when it hasn't worked for us for a while now.

Please do not lump T20s and odis. I never said selectors did a good job for T20 selection. Dhoni is one of the worst T20 players but he is a  great Odi player.

 

Dhoni's captaincy and his selection has costed India atleast one T20 cup. Selectors have done lousy job in T20 selection since 2007 .But CT is an ODI tournament and IMHO they have done decent selection.

Rahane and Yuvraj aren't good odi players anymore and shouldn't be around so the selectors haven't done that great a job in odis as well. In shorter formats our selectors have been too conservative and it showed in our results.

Rahane never was a good odi/t20 player but if Pant was not being selected as third opener and Robin Uttapa is the only player who might feel left out.

We do not know if Pant wants to be selected as an opener.Personally I would not break Rohit Dhawan combo and I do not see where you would fit Pant in playing eleven.

Yuvi was brought back as others like Pandey did not seize their chances. To his credit Yuvi hit a great 150 when given a chance so how can you drop him.

 

To his credit Yuvi did the hard grind by playing all the domestic tournaments and scoring heavily there unlike Bhajji who thinks playing in IPL is enough to make a comeback. I am so glad they kept Bhajji out he does not deserve a spot.

way too much pessimism here. Look at the bright side, this is basically the same team that is 12-1 in the last two ODI icc tournaments. In fact its a lot better with the additions of Bumrah, Jadhav and Pandya.
