Brainfade Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Two incidents in 5 weeks. One at LSU and now near Duke. In both cases, it appears to be "assassination" style. Robbery was ruled out as a motive in the LSU case. Although they are talking about robbery being the motive in the Duke case, I am not so sure if that will hold up. I identify with the victims - 10 years ago, I was in univ housing close to a "shady" locality. The drive back after a long night in the lab was not fun. Nothing ever really happened, but looking back, I was a soft target. I am a bit disturbed now, and am thinking that these are gang-initiation type incidents. Indian students are being identified as soft targets (unarmed, usually of small physical stature and less like to fight back violently, thus easy targets). Any thoughts from this group?

Lurker Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Very sad to hear this. I wouldnt be surprised if there is indeed a soft-target angle at play here. On a similar note this remains perhaps my worst nightmare. To land into an unsavoury position in a foreign land and quite possibly not too many people will realize if you went missing one day :((

Don't open the door; do try to walk in groups.

Dont get too complacent even if you are in the middle of Bihar (or wherever it is you are most comfortable) Always be paranoid and safe

Yes sure it is good to be careful(which makes me wonder why do you have to go to grocery store after night falls?) but dont let it change your lifestyle.

Just that, off late, I am bit more circumspect than usual , looking over my shoulder every now and then If i am walking alone. Consider this for how the Indian students's incident has kinda affected my lifestyle. I usually go for 40 minute walks, around 9 9.30 in the night. The other night, I wore my fleece jacket, stepped out and just 30 secs into my walk, I suddenly felt this huge feeling of insecurity, something that i have never felt before. Hurriedly, I returned home, pondering whether what I had done is right or wrong. Bad signs, I know !
